the owner's manual says "If the clock is set to external synchronization, "Ext" will be shown in the display and you won't be able to specify the BPM value."

I get the "EXT" dialog for all the presets and features.

What am i doing wrong?

Sounds to me like you simply need to press the program/bpm knob again.
