do i need a radias?

Post by kiran »

Hi everyone

I have :

Kontrol 49
KP3
Microkorg XL
Kaossilator
Mini KP
all 3 of the NANOs

I was thinking to trade all these just for the Radias+rack but my question is do the things i have do the same things that the radias does?

No, the Radias is a downgrade from what you already have.

The Microkorg XL already has a large part of the Radias engine, not as much as the R3, but still a very good chunk of it. It's mostly missing the effects, 2 vs. 4 timbres, an 8 poly vs. 24 poly. Your KP3 or miniKP makes up for the effects. The rest isn't really all that important. The KP3 does sampling, and the Radias has NO sampling. The KP3 is great for live effects with the XY pad, while the Radias isn't.

The Kaossilator can't be replaced by anything. The Kaossilator+KP3 is a great combo.

The Nanos can all be replaced with better, but larger and less portable controllers. The padKontrol is a better midi pad controller, because it has midi-out. You can use it directly with your MKXL. The nanos can't do that.

I'd say sell the nanos and the miniKP. The KP3 does everything the miniKP does, but better. The drum patterns on the KP3 are great.

So are you saying that i can link my Kontrol 49 with my MKXL by midi in/out put?

I am a noob and never knew what midi was to be honest.

Yes, you can connect the midi out of the Kontrol 49 to the midi in of the MKXL. You can only play two different kinds of sounds at the same time on the MKXL, however, just one per timbre. But since your KP3 has 4 sample pads, you could build up layers of sounds, sampling one or two at a time played on the MKXL and using the built-in drum patterns on the KP3. You can do that with the Kaossilator+KP3 too, build up a whole song by sampling sounds one at a time.

Before you sell anything, you might take the time to learn how all the gear you have works, since it would be a shame if you sold it and then find out too late that you could use the features they offer.

the other problem with the MKxl is that if you are doing this then you are limited to eight notes polyphony - between ALL the timbres. less if you are using voice unison.

also don't forget the Radias has drums, four timbres, massive polyphony, and a wider variety of effects.

plus two step sequencers..

I can admit it would be a very difficult decision, there is a lot of overlap - step sequencers vs looper/sampling, effects vs KP.

if i were you I would save up, the best combination would be the Radias, KP3, and Kontrol49.
The thing that sells the radias versues your other stuff is obviously you can load in a lot of settings just by loading a radias patch, rather than having to change settings on lots of gear at once...

But if he keeps the MKXL and gets a TR61 or Triton Extreme, he'll get much more polyphony, timbres, a sequencer, and a lot more musical range of options than upgrading the MKXL. It really depends on the budget. A Radias + ROMpler/Sampler keyboard would be better, but the MKXL + a cheap Triton TR61 give a lot for a lower price, at least considering that he already owns the XL and might take a loss selling it.
