USB drive data problem - CHECK YOUR BACKUPS

Hi all

This happened to me a little while ago and has only happened once, however, in view of Asena's recent experience I thought I would let you know what happened to me.
This is on my PA2XPro at OS 2.01.

I connected my USB drive and saved a new SET on it. I could see the SET on the USB drive and could actually access it from that drive. When I removed the USB drive and inserted in into my PC (I was making a backup copy on my PC) the SET did not exist. I went back to the PA2XPro and re-inserted the USB drive and sure enough my new SET was NOT there. I repeated the process and the same thing happened. I tried a few different things and the only time it seemed to work correctly and actually save the SET, was when I saved it onto the USB drive in its top (root) directory - saving it in a sub-directory failed.

HOWEVER, this has not happened since - I cannot reproduce the problem, even on the same USB drive - BUT I always double-check all my USB saves now.

PLEASE get into the habit of backing up all your changes and keep at least 2 copies. I keep a copy of everything on my PA2XPro Hard Drive, my USB drive and my PC Hard Drive - trust me, it's worth it. This is the nature of computing and you cannot trust anything these days - faulty USB, faulty Hard Drive, software glitch, etc... etc...

Cheers

Thanks for the informartion Pete. In my case i purchased a new USB yesterday and the PA2X doesn't recognise it, it keeps displaying a message which says "insert USB". It is a normal USB stick. I'm wondering if there are specific USB's which the keyboard only recognises.

Hey mrkorg

I too have USB drives that my PA2XPro and my Yamaha do not recognise - same error message ... it is annoying, but I think some of these USB keys have extras on them which are causing problems. My Toshiba and Kingston USB key drives are OK.

Cheers

Format it on your computer and insert into PA2X.
Re format on Pa2X.....should work fine.

Hi Guys.
I had problems exactly like this on my OASYS and Dan at KORG R&D said your supposed to run the Scan option when you insert or remove a memory stick. Since doing that I have never had another problem since.

Do you have this feature on the Pa2X ?.

This problem also happens if youur USB has any residual U3 partition on it. You cannot see it. U3 is a partition containing executable code which is used to autoplay music and CD images on a PC or MAC. But it screws up the OS on the Pa2x/ Pa800 (and the M3) in just the way Pete mentioned.

In the case of Sandisk Cruzer USB sicks, there is a utility you can download from Sandisk's web site which will wipe the U3 partition and reformat the USB stick so it is a data only device.

We hereby request Korg to modify their operating systems to ignore U3 partitions to prevent this type of problem from recurring.

Best regards,
Rob

Speaking of USB drives, is there a correct way to remove it from Korg PA800? Like using USB Eject icon in Windows in order to spin HDD down before it's removed... Even USB stick can be damaged if removed without first powered down. However I didn't find an "eject" button on my synth...

The USB interface is "hot swap" meaning there is no requirement to power down before removing it. However you will cause data corruption if you unplug the device in the middle of a write operation.
