What's on your Oasys "Things I must check out list"

I just checked one thing off my Oasys "Things I must check out" list, and was wondering if other users have a similar list in their head.. It'd be interesting to hear what things you've been meaning to try out and didn't get round to yet.
Anyway the thing I was just checking out was the CX-3 EXi, which I hadn't really paid any attention to previously, but then hearing organ stuff I liked on Raconteurs and REM tracks inspired me to go take a look. The CX-3 presets in the Oasys aren't personal cup of tea so I'd removed them a while back to make space for other proggies, so I just dived in there and started messing with all those somewhat mysterious (to me) and fascinating parameters. Fantastic fun and there really are some some great gritty/crunchy sounds to be had in there. The amp in there is great, but using the guitar amp/cabinet IFX is even more fun. I am very glad I looked in there, and now I must learn to use it properly
So what's on your list ?

I have such a list (I always have lists

). What I'd like to check out / do is:
- Program simple Combis using Karma for quickly recording different drafts of a new song
- Try out the vocoder effect on different synth-engines (esp. Mod-7)
- Sample drumsounds and use these as basis for some "unusual" drums/effects
- Create my own wave-sequences
- Learn how to use this "real-time-pattern-play"
- Program at least one sound within each synth-engine (again esp. Mod-7)
- Try out the step sequencer
- Create my own KGEs
But to be honest: I'd be happy if I manage to do ONE of these. My music time is so precious I prefer spending it on composing and recording rather than diving deeper in technical things.

There are lots of skills to develop, but for this moment:
- Editing the MS-20 Patch panel
- Deep editing the MOD-7, STR-1, AL-1. Those incredible synths can keep me busy for years
- making my own wavesequences. I made some but only at the surface. I love the wavesequencing together with KARMA.
- Resampling PROGand COMBIS with and without KARMA for creating new Multisamples to use in PROGS and COMBIS.
- Creating my own KARMAfied COMBIS with me own edited sounds. The new Catalyst gave me new inspiration.
- Sequencing my own songs.
But I agree with Charlie.....I whish I could spend more time with the O, so I must not forget to make music.

Something really important for me is to look at turning the OASYS into an Arranger Keyboard
I've extracted all the factory styles from the Pa1X pro and I have KORG's tool for converting that data to midi file format. So I need to get KARMA OASYS running right on my laptop so I can explore the possibility of creating COMBI KARMA Arranger sounds.
I think it will be very interesting if this works. To be able to use the scenes to run the Pa1X Styles for Intro, Variations and engines will be really amazing from a song writing point of view, and backing anyone I can get into the Studio.
Regards.

Very interesting gentleman

I am stealing some of your little ideas !
A few things from my list :
- exploring making better use of the effects in the Oasys in my DAW setup, for example using the O-Verb on a send/return buss, or re-amping guitar or bass track through the Oasys amp/cabinet modelling. I also really the Korg Modulation Delay and Multiband Delay. I have the EXB-DI so I should be able to do more there.
- making my programs more performance oriented, i.e. making better use of the controllers, especially the ribbon and VJS, oh and my newly acquired expression pedal.
- making better use of sampling. When I've experimented with sampling sounds I've created on the v-synth, and then turning them into something more rich on the Oasys, it's always worked well and I need to make more use of that.
- I had some great results importing GM format drum loops into Karma Oasys and then creating a bunch of extra variations from that. I need to use that technique more and integrate it better with my DAW, as well sending the user GE's to the Oasys and using them for jamming.

Off topic @ sharp: Did you receive my mail and PM?
On topic: I like this arranger idea a lot. I've tried a similar thing - but "handmade" in Karma. Biggest issue are the Bass KGEs that very often vary too much in their melodic output (same is true for accompanying patterns) limiting their use or you have to remap them. Sharp, if you come up with something easy to handle I'd be very interested in this!

Curvebender,
Me too! Got to buy Karma Oasys and capture Stephen's monster.
Unfortunately, as others have pointed out, most of us have limited time and other interests & responsibilities that keep us from doing nothing but music all day, every day.
I must also get to cracking the code in STR1 also.

Karma is one area of the Oasys I would love to delve into, but like the others, time is an issue for me, with full time work and classical piano studies i have no time to explore any of its engines, unfortunately this leaves me with limited weekend time to play with the presets.

It may sound silly but, Currently, my main area of concentration is on the Oasys sequencer. Yep, I swore I would never use it.
I have a full blown external DAW with vsti servers, etc. but mostimes I don't want to fire all that stuff up just to spend an hour or less.
I mostly find myself spending my spare time just setting at the Oasys with headphones on and then something musical happens.
I want to be able to capture that moment, continue to build it and edit events without becoming overly frustrated because I don't understand how the internal sequencer works. I have been able to spend the last couple of days with it and I must admit it is pretty cool but some of the limitations can still be frustrating... i.e. track looping, measures only, no beats? ticks? And, I have looked all over for that silly piano roll view and I'll be darned if I can find it.
Hopefully by the end of this week I will feel alot more comfortable with the internal sequencer and can find some work arounds to the things I currently feel are limitations. At this stage the biggest limitation is still my lack of knowledge. One last note; without the online help and the Parameter guide I would be completely lost.

Rick

OT: I know exactly how you feel - but keep on learning - it's worth the efforts - esp. for the use you have in your mind! In case you haven't found out already: there's a good section explaining the basics in a "cross over" sort of way in the "thin" manual (not the "telephonebook"), there is some stuff on the "Unofficial Oasys DVD" and there are some very valuable threads here helping to get started. Eg. how to use the many song slots efficiently, how to move around parts, routing, stereo-pairing, drum-tracks etc.
