Looking For A File Back-Up Recommendation

Hi All...

Well, now that I've gotten my feet wet with my Oasys, I figure I should do the smart thing and start backing up my song files ...However, there are a lot more choices now than ever before ...Any thoughts or recommendations? ...I'm open to anything ...From removeable media to an external HD ...Thanks, much ...I really appreciate any visibility you can provide.

USB sticks work great for me. I have two that attach to the Oasys and are accessable. These hold a lot more info and upload quicker than accessing from the CD player. Haven't tried removable hard disk myself although others here have. The sticks are pretty reasonable. I would suggest picking one up and trying it out.

I prefer an external HDD. Sticks are fine for smaller amounts of data and for moving data between different worlds (Oasys to PC to Mac etc.).
I use a WD 500 GB external HDD. It is very silent, never failed me and quite convenient.

No problem Steve. Actually Kingstons work great for me. Others here have mentioned that some sticks come partitioned and can be problematic. That has not occurred with the Kingstons, they come unfettered so far. One thing, plug your stick in "before" you power up so your Oasys can find it. Gald to help.

Sorry, 2 gig is good. I also have a 4 gig that seems to work fine.

Inserting before startup shouldn't be necessary. For more information, see "Mounting USB devices" on page 751 of the Parameter Guide (latest version, E5).

You can plug in or remove a Jump Drive at any time (except during data transfer). The OASYS scans for drives at start up, but you can tell it to scan, at any time. When you stick your USB drive in go to:

DISK mode

Press MEDIA INFO tab

Select dropdown menu and SCAN DEVICE.

You can now select the DRIVE SELECT arrow and a pop up window should show the newly plugged in drive.

I use an 80 gig USB hard drive to back up my files. However, the Jump Drive sticks are so big now, you can use them to transfer data from your OASYS to your computer and store on a drive there. I use the Jump sticks to store .wav files of songs in my computer.

Thanks for the heads-up on Western Digital ...What specific model are you all using? ...I'm assuming this is a desktop external ...If so, they're all called "My Book" ...As in "My Book Essential" ..."My Book Studio" ..."My Book Home" ...Thanks, again.

Hey thanks Mike. I was not asking the Oasys to scan, ergo it wasn't seeing them. Appreciate the input on proceedure, since I only have the original parameter guide that came with my Oasys. You saved me time in research.

You can download PDFs of the latest manual versions from korguser.net.
I'd highly recommend doing so; they have many improvements across the board, not limited to information about the new features. Plus, they're designed to be "good citizen" PDF documents, with hyperlinks for cross-references, structured TOC, etc. Searching works well, too. Personally, I never touch the paper versions.

These WD-HDDs change all the time. I've got one for the Oasys which is not the "book-cover-type" but conventional design. The other is "book-cover-type" and I use it as my "Time Machine" HDD for the iMac.

Both work well - no problems at all for more than a year. I chose mine after reading the comments at Amazon. I doubt the modells I bought are still available ...

Thanks, for that ...Curiously, enough, I was just on the phone with Western Digital ...Say, I was wondering ...Do you know what kind of formatting the Oasys requires? ...i.e., Mac or Win ...Or, are either ok?

By the by, when I was speaking with the rep from Western he told me that two of their models, The Studio II and The Mirror are dual drive systems with auto back-up storage ...So, apparently, you're doubly covered, back-up wise ...Those models only come in 1 and 2 Terabyte sizes ...Now, I did find out from Korg that the Oasys will take a drive up to 2 Terabytes ...So, I'm thinking of going with one of those ...Do you think that's a good idea? ...Or, is there any reason that it might be better to go with something a little smaller?
