expression pedal

Post by SoulBe »

Hi,

I just bought an exp2 for the organ sounds and set on global page the foot pedal parameter to expression. Is there a possiblity to adjust the level in the programms, because I can´t adjust a minimum level - either full or nothing - same thing, when I choose volume CC 7, but I at least want a minimum volume level / wider scale on the pedal. Does anyone have a solution for this ?
Because in CX 3 programs there is an expression page, but when I use the pedal it has not an effect (only volume) until I put the parameter on global page for the foot controler on CC 4 and then on the "expression" page in program I put the AMS parameter to CC 4 ..... but why does it not work when I put the parameter on global page on CC 11 expression for the pedal?

Seems that I´m doing something wrong .... .

And how you integrate expression in a HDR 1 organ program with the pedal? I tried again with AMS parameter on the drive/amp site an CC 4 assignment but with CC 11 it only effects the volume ........

Thanks

So..
what I did to get an sufficiant result for me is to use two organ sounds in a combination, the first without beeing effected by the pedal to have a basic organ sound, the second with pedal on CC 4 to add via AMS on drive/amp more overdrive and volume to it.
When using the expression page in a single program the minimum level (30) wasn´t loud enough/without enough drive, so I came to the solution with the two sounds.
Still I guess there must be an easier way to deal with this (finer scale for expression) within one single program, when I found out I´ll post it. :D

I'm sorry, but I've read your messages several times, and I can't figure out what you're trying to do.
I understand that English is not your native language, and I very much appreciate that your English is much better than my German. If you could try to explain again using fewer words, it might help. Try short sentences and example parameter settings.

Best regards,

Hi Dan,

sorry for my bad english , I´ll try to explain:

When I use the expression pedal on CX 3 sounds it seems that it controls 2 parameters - volume and expression.
For example: lifting the pedal up decreases the volume so much that I hardly hear the sound, pressing it down adds too much volume.
So I raised the minimum level on the expression page that in case of lifting the pedal up the sound volume is "normal". But when I do that the scale between the minimum expression level and the maximun (when I press the pedal down) is small, that means has no big effect.

In my opinion expression is not the same like volume (maybe I´m wrong here?) but it seems that the volume level is also controlled with the expression pedal at the same time. So I have a problem with the volume when the pedal is lifted up. Can I disconnect or parameter the influence of the expression pedal to the volume?

And because of that I use 2 programs in a combie: one to have a basic volume level that is not affected by the pedal and then the second program to add expression to the sound.

I think Deanno´s post is about the same problem - volume level beeing controlled by expression and disconnecting the volume beeing affected by the expression pedal.

Thanks

Please don't worry about that; my German is very poor indeed! I just want to make sure that I understand.

Expression controls the drive into the Amp section. As such, it directly controls volume. The tonal changes you hear with expression are largely the result of hitting the amp harder, which results in more distortion (like playing louder through a guitar amp). There is also a small amount of EQ that comes in at low Expression settings. This is designed to model the behavior of the Hammond volume pedal.

Here are a few quotes from the Parameter Guide about this:

p. 221:
Expression adjusts both the volume level and the
amount of distortion. At lower Expression values, both
the low bass and high treble frequencies are slightly
emphasized. The Amp section interacts with
Expression; for more details, see “7–1a: Amp,” on
page 230.

To allow optimal modulation flexibility, the AMS
works differently from most other parameters. See
Mode, below, for more details.

p. 230:
Expression also adjusts the drive into the Amp section.
With higher Amp Gain settings, you’ll get more
overdrive and distortion as you increase the
Expression amount.

Here are a few notes on volume and expression in the CX-3:

* If the Expression AMS Mode = Both Scale, you can control both the minimum and maximum Expression amounts. Expression Minimum controls the minimum; Expression Level controls the maximum; the AMS source (such as CC#4, the mod pedal) sweeps between the min and max.

* Overall volume can be controlled by the front-panel Control Surface, via the Level sliders for EXi 1/2.

* In the Main Output section of CX-3 P7 (Amp, V/C, Rotary Speaker), you can modulate the output volume of the amp via AMS. This controls only volume, and not tone.

This may not be the best approach. As with a real Hammond, if the pedal is lifted up all the way, the sound should be fairly quiet.

Thanks a lot Dan for this.

Now I better understand how the parameters work together and can cope with it.

Best regards
