BeeBrother wrote:Hi everyone. My name is Steve McNally. Like Skip, I'm one of the Korg voicing team members. Some of my Oasys combis include "Birds On a Wire", "Gossamer Wind", "Chimes & Tines", "The Sneak", "His Resting Place", "Waiting Room", "Alto Sax Split 'n' Strut" and others. I'm a little late into this subject but I wanted to quickly add a couple things that may hopefully help to make your own combis. First, as you've gone thru the combis you've obviously noticed that they cover a wide range of approaches. That's because each one of the programmers has different approaches, musical influences, etc. Most of the time I approach voicing from a songwriting angle since that's one of my main interests. However, when I was working on the Oasys, the tools for movement and rhythm totally fascinated me as you'll hear in many of my combis. As far as 'how' to make them, that, again, is personal. I tend to make the sound itself first and then add what I think Karma should do (one of the members at the time did the complete opposite). I sometimes start with something as simple as putting the first 2 timbres on the same midi channel and then experimenting with combining 2 sounds together. Even jumping to the Tone Adjust control surface and shaping the sounds (Forget about what each slider, switch and knob does - just tweak and experiment). I don't tend to say in my mind "I'm going to make a String pad with a bell" and then make it. I let the creativity and interaction with the Oasys take me to my final sound - the same way I write music. I may start with the seed of the idea, but experimenting gives me my final song idea - the same with voicing. The problems many times lead to not only the answer but a cool result. For example, on "Bird on a Wire" (A25) I called up the Grain Shifter effect which made my original effort sound awful. I tried putting a Belltree thru it instead and it made this great rhythmic metalic sound. Next problem was it was always there and soon became irritating. So I used Vector to bring it in and out rhythmically. This led to adding the BPM Ribbon Trance sound to give it rhythm in the mid frequencies and on and on. My point is: experiment. You won't break anything. Good luck!
Wow, Steve, is it really you.
Thanks so munch for jumping in and welcome, welcome to this forum. Thanks for sharing your vision and approach to combi creation you are very passionate about the music and it shows in your work.I'm going to check out all the combi's you talked about and I'm going to try some of your techniques to combi creation (I never looked at combi creation like you ,I can't wait to dig into tone adjust). After hearing from you and Skip it seems you guys take great pride in the amazing combi's you made. Please jump
in at anytime and share, please don't keep all your genius to your self.As Jerry said somewhere in a post The Oasys is a "wonderful musical instrument" any insight to it from the minds who help make it is a true blessing.
Peace
