it shouldn't... i've never had my M3 freeze up from removing a USB drive. Just don't remove it while your saving or loading from a USB drive.

Perhaps your USB drive isn't formatted correctly? Try formatting it straight from the M3. Using a drive that's not formatted on the M3 can cause problems.

Back up anything on that USB drive.

Go to Media Mode.

Touch the Utility tab.

From the drop down menu, select "Format"

select "Full Format" and either FAT16 or FAT32.

This will take a little while to complete... but it should fix your problem.

I know you solved this problem a long time ago...just wanted to add...my USB stick has frozen my M3 countless times. In addition, this amazing keyboard has corrupted files on my flash drive:/

To my bigggg surprise my m3 recently (for first and only time over a year of usage) froze while I intensively tweaked karma parameters - all controls become inactive and buzzing sound was produced - so I had to power it off and on again. Consequently this is not an usb thing - m3 is like computer and obviously it is possible to give commands which coincidently make m3 freezing although I think this hardly will happen if you play m3 normally. This most likely will happen if you tweak several parameters intensively at programm/combi building stage.

Tell me what exactly does it say when it freezes, it should give you a message,
there is a post in here that me, Jerry from Korg USA, James (Sharp) and the
engineers from Japan worked on that problem...or similar. Its gotta be the
USB device with the 3UDF allocations or whatever they call it.
Try to recreate the bug, check what it says, what system is installed and what
device are you using on it? I recreated a problem similar to it over 50 times
untill we actually found out what it was...it was a bit complicated.

Data corruption occurs leading to various crashes occurs on the M3 if you use a USB stick that contains hidden partitions such as U3 or Startdrive.

You can test the USB stick on a PC first. If a "chooser screen"" appears asking you what you want to do with the device, and you have to tell it that you want to open a folder display, then the USb stick is OK for use with the M3. If however the USB stick causes any other application to automatically run, for example a music player or any other application, then the USB device can not be used with the M3.

I recommend that you use "Lexar" USB sticks, which all work perfectly. Do not use any sticks from Sandisk or Kingston because the latest sticks from those manufacturers contain U3 partitions and will not work on the M3.

Korg are aware of the problem with USB sticks containing hidden partitions. It is a development in the last 2 years which Korg had not foreseen at the time of designing the M3. They have published a guide to USb sticks here:

Thanks Rob, that really helps. I've got a SanDisk, which does have a U3 partition, and that does show up on the M3. I'll get a lexar. Another question though...any idea if external hard drives will work with the M3? I'm assuming that it must be flash memory (anything else probably wouldn't be fast enough). But has anyone tried? Are there flash external hard drives out there? thanks again ROb.

Hi Jake,

Yes, hard drives attached via USB interface will work, noting the following constraints:

a) The hard drive must be independently powered with its own PSU, the M3 can not provide enough USB power for an external hard drive.

b) The hard drive interface must support USB1 or USB1.1. If the hard drive requires a USB2 interface then it worn't work on the M3.

c) The hard drive must be formatted using the M3, use FAT32 block structure, do not attempt to format it on a PC, since the PC normally creates two partitions.

d) The hard drive will be slower, not faster, than using a USB flash memory stick.

Best regards,
Rob
