Anyone record vocals on Oasys?
I have an Oasys and a computer with acid pro 6. I'm wondering if it's worth learning how to record and edit/ engineer everything on the korg. Can anyone give me some tips? I'm doing R&B/hip hop and all my tracks are internal wave files on the sequencer. I have been creating tracks on the sequencer since '05 so I know my way around it- and am wondering if it would make things easier if I could cut out the computer completely and do the whole job on the keyboard I payed so much for, lol...
thanks
thanks
Hello.
I don't use it for Vocals but I do use it for bouncing down COMBI sounds to stereo audio tracks so I can free up the midi sequencer again for more recording. So I know how flexible it is.
I can't think of any reason why using the OASYS for vocals would be a bad idea. The effects engine and the ability to do resampling will give you quite a flexible system to do new things others might not have thought of. For starters the Pitch Shifter would be great applied to any vocals you Rap for example.
You will find this in the Mod/Pitch page of the Effects engine and there are a few to try. There's also plenty other effects in there that will add a different dimension to your vocals.
Regards
Sharp.

My only concern, really, is that editing might be difficult for vocals.... A couple of times I have deleted an audio track- then it will say "destination is empty" when I try to record on that same track... I saw a post where someone had a similar prob. I don't want to be saving the song in four seperate times just to make sure I don't delete or save something ithat changed without me realizing... idk, there is no "undo" button on these things, you know...?

I've used Oasys for recording vocals. Used to create a playback first, bounce it to paired audio-tracks (see Mike Conways Vid's for that in case you're not familiar) and then record voc's - up to 12 tracks and no problems at all. Esp. working with the sliders etc. is fun (or automation with visual feedback via the LEDs) and I enjoyed it more than fiddling around with the mouse.
Extensive audio-editing on a small screen and without mouse is not so much fun though. I was lucky with having reasonably well singers so that was no real problem. But if you do a lot of comping or audio-editing I'm afraid this will be tough on the Oasys.
Nowadays I'm working with Logic. Software DAWs offer a higher flexibility but come with all the pains of computers (updates, incompatibilities, additional cables, boxes, surprises etc.). So you'll have to decide what suits you more. I suggest you give it a try and see for yourself. The reason I switched to Logic was RMX (and not problems with the Oasys).

I figure editng vocals without a large screen and moving pointer might be more work- but the thing I like about creating songs through recording internal sounds and quantizing them I know the timing is perfect... So I guess as long as the vocals are somewhat compartmentalized and good- I shouldn't have too much to worry abt...

If you don't use any other gear (sound-modules, plug-ins etc.) AND you don't do much audio-editing than doing everything inside Oasys is the best solution for you IMHO.
BTW if you follow my sig-link there are 2 demo-songs: "Love is a verb" and "Observe your mind" which were done completely inside Oasys. A description of what I was doing can be found on Blogasys (be patient - getting to the site is a bit slow - once the page pops up you'll have to scroll down to "Februar 3rd, 2008" on this page http://blog.petermmahr.com/category/interviews/). You'll find other demos there as well - all done without external gear (besides AKG-microphone and headphones

I'm thinking of using the OASYS to record "external's" in like Guitar (acoustic) but not got a microphone yet, what kind of mic would one need to record "professionaly" (as can be)? Phantom power mics?, node.rode, nuemann? (i'm talking less than £100 here as some mics can cost - well thousands

I have recorded acoustic guitars too and used a "standard" Shure microphone for this. Doesn't require phantom power and was originally meant for recording electric guitars. But the quality was more than good enough.
If you're looking for micros esp. for ac. guit. here's a long list with varying prices and qualities (all in EUR):

In this list is an AKGC3000 Micro, too. I use the predecessor for recording vox too and the quality is good. Costs more than 100 though.

I had a Sure mic before- it was around $250 U.S. it was ok till I got a tube mic which allows you to modify the way in which the sound is received ie- unidirectional to cardroid. But anyway- the tube mic is the s**t. It cost me about $850 U.S. but it is worth every penny when you hear the difference. I have a friend who uses a Sure mic like I had with enhancement programs.... I think the brand of my mic is SE - but it is a great studio mic- I haven't heard the same quality with anything cheaper... Save up for one.... It is a good investment.
