Kaoss + guitar ?

Post by blixa »

Hello,
I want to put together kaoss products and electric guitar.
I mean - have many possible guitar sounds and effects [px5d?] and be able to create beats, samples and mix both things [instruments] together - in real time [and later too]. I' ve got something like digital hardcore [ATR], industrial sound on my mind. O, and I want to record it.
So, is it possible to put together px5d and kaossilator [or maybe kaossilator pro for what i've write?] , mix it, record it [with this korg stuff] and maybe use my guitar amp [fender frontman] for sounding.
OR maybe I need something more for that? KP3? Forgive me, but I am totally confused with all that cool korg products. I am from generation which was using only guitar and amp, and now I want some experiments ;)

It should be possible to play guitar from an effects unit into a loop, although I have to admit I haven't tried it yet. The slight issue is that the manual says you have to hold the record button down when you record external audio input, which will be hard when playing the guitar....

Regarding "mixing" it, this really depends what you mean. You can mix external audio and KPro sounds into a 16-beat loop and you can have up to 4 loops on the KPro. You can also mix the balance of the 4 loops if they are all playing together. But you cannot sequence the loops into songs.

You could play back through a guitar amp but it probably won't sound that good, especially if you are using the Kaoss synth sounds.

Don't you just press "REC" then arm your chosen bank, leaving you with both hands free to play the external input device?

Yep, press REC and then the bank you want to record to, it does count.

Only problem is doing all this while trying to play live, I would say it's nearly impossible, using a guitar that is.

It's very much what I intend to do with it. Not only guitar but it will be included.

Couple of notes here:

For beatmaking: Yes, you can absolutely do the sort of thing you're talking about, but be aware that the onboard sounds of the KP3 are pretty limited. I think of them more as a way to augment a beat coming from somewhere else (vinyl, other drum machine, etc.) rather than for creating a beat from scratch.

If you're on a budget, you might consider picking up an ER-1 Electribe. They've got an audio input where you could mix your guitar in with your beats. From what I've seen on this forum, the new Kaossilator Pro might also meet your needs -- but check the recent thread on it, I haven't tried one myself.

For recording: If you do decide to go with the KP3 and need to trigger its recording function in a live setting while you're playing guitar, a MIDI footpedal like the Behringer FCB can solve most of your problems. There's only one thing you've mentioned wanting to do that you MUST do with your fingers: Press the REC button. After you've done that, you can program a MIDI controller to start recording to the bank (A-D) you choose, turn the banks on/off individually, choose different effect settings, adjust the X/Y of the screen, etc., and all these other functions can be selected with your feet.

This does indeed work, and you can keep laying more guitar lines over what you have played. I used my Zoom G21u and it sounded great.

I can't see any problem doing this playing live, provided you have the KPro at the right height. You only have to the record button once and then the loop bank button to which you want to record the guitar. Mount the KPro on a stand angled towards you and this will work fine. Of course, a midi foot controller would make this a bit easier, think I will have to get a Behringer FCB!
