To my knowledge FLstudio is a computer based DAW and should be compatible with any stand alone instrument like the Oasys via midi cables. Nothing special going on there.

Ok, so im new to midi conections..

what I want to clarify is

I want to compose in 7.1 and I know the oasys has 8 outputs and that the oasys has its own soundcard. so if im not conecting it to a soundcard's midi port that is conected to my pc, what do I need to get.

Intuitivley I'm guessing a hardware mixer will be required although i've never looked into this before just vaguely skimed over other peoples threads here n there, am I using the corect terminology for such a device

thanx

bear in mind I have alredy looked into usb conections and this isnt an option with the oasys where conecting to a pc is concerned, only does it support for external usb devices such as cd drives and players, and it says that it must be connected via midi to a DAW

MIDI connections will allow you to control things, but they won't carry any sound.

For example, you could hook the MIDI out from the OASYS to a rack synth, and the rack synth would respond to the OASYS' keyboard (assuming they are set to the right channel). Going further in combi or sequencer mode and using channels, you could assign KARMA modules to control the external synth.

The same goes for working with a DAW, MIDI will allow you to input data into a sequencer for example in order to trigger softsynths, or play the softsynths live just like the Rack Synth example above.

If you take this a step further, you could record the MIDI from a synth into your sequencer, including parameter tweaks, etc. Then you could overdub more parameter tweaks on top and correct any mistake notes. When you play the MIDI back routed to the same synth you recorded it on, the synthesizer will play back exactly what you did before, with the additional tweaks and corrections.

Understand this is different to playing back a recording of the synth. The synth (e.g. The OASYS) is still required to make the sound. In theory you could change patches and get a completely different sound playing the same notes, depending on how you have the system set up (it may send a program change and force the synth back to the same program you used before). If you took the synth away, or didn't have the audio connections plugged in, you wouldn't hear anything. You've only recorded the MIDI data stream, not the audio that resulted from your performance.

MIDI comprises of a series of messages saying what notes have been pressed and released, when controls have been changed, program change and bank change numbers, etc. It needs a synth of some kind at the other end in order for you to hear anything.

If you want to record your OASYS or any other synth, you want an audio interface/soundcard - these will typically come as an internal PCI card, or more commonly an external USB or Firewire box.

If you want to record that many channels, you will need an interface with that many inputs. Alternatively, you could connect using the SP/DIF optical digital connection - but you'd still need a card or box that has that connection too for your computer.
