Casio to Oasys?

Post by Pianomanjess »

Hello all,
This is my first post. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed went from a Casio 1630 to a Korg Oasys 88. I have never owned a professional or semi professional keyboard before although I have played a motif 6 at my old church and a triton 61 for my new church. Any useful tips to help adjust would be great!

ya, that is quite a jump, isn't it!?! pretty much from one end of the spectrum to the other. I never owned an OASYS ... but first and foremost, learn what each mode does. Program mode is your most basic mode. Each program is a basic sound, whether it be strings, piano, or a drum kit. Combi mode lets you control up to 16 programs from the keyboard at once, and can do a number of sweet things. There are a lot of different combinations you can try out. Sequencer mode works a lot like Combi mode where you can use up to 16 programs, but you can record them playing (usually different things on each track).

After learning what each thing on the interface does, i'd focus on learning to use the sequencer. try loading up the demo songs and playing them, changing the programs around, adjusting volumes and other settings just to see what everything does. eventually you can try recording a new song.

I recorded a couple times, using different voices from program mode and using a combi once, and managed to change them from midi to audio. It is just going to take time to learn as everything is so advancEd, but what else should I have expected after buying such an advanced machine...

Don't be afraid to start off using only onboard presets. You've used a Triton so you're at least familiar with the basics of Korg's architecture (as far as combis, programs, and sequences go), and I don't think the OASYS changes much there. But start simple. Start with using just programs or combis, then move to making your own combis just by layering existing programs together, then maybe add in figuring out how to use some of the performance controls like the joystick and SW1/SW2, and lastly, start picking apart the various engines one by one. The organ engine (CX-3) is probably a good place to start, especially if you've ever played a real Hammond organ before and know basically how the drawbars and other settings work, and the HD-1 engine is pretty similar to the HI engine used in the Triton for playing back all the ROM and RAM samples. I'd leave the other engines to the end.

Enjoy it!

KARMA is real....

Post by John Hendry »

Actually that keyboard has made a lot of good musicians feel Bad about it.

Why? Since you are new here I’ll be happy to go though a few things and then if you want I’ll trade you my new M50 for it. It has an easier to use sequencer.

The OASYS biggest problem has to do with “preassembled parts” availability. Korg stopped stocking the two “preassembled parts” most often ordered after they sold out. So you will be stuck with a keyboard known to make really good players feel bad without even playing it. Now, tell them they can’t have your Casio and to stay away from it. See…It all comes down to how a keyboard makes a person feel. The sooner we trade the better I’ll feel for helping you out here.

The OASYS has no Poly AT. This is too emotionally damaging to talk about.

Also it won’t sound good unless you push EXACTLY the right button and get this right every time.

Plus you must push that button in EXACTLY the right sequence or the other buttons won't work.

And after you figure that out if you push it before any other button again you have to start all over and this happens all the time.

Not only that the power cord comes off if you pull on it. The M50 resolved this and has a cool looking green light added.

And if you have ever told a lie, cheated on your girl friend, not paid your taxes, kicked a dog, or done anything to upset a person like say “no way” you won’t like it because they went and put KARMA in it and everyone will want to steal it from you.

Just say when……but hurry before someone steals my M50.

Enjoy!

You are just completely evil  and you know it. No wonder someone would steal you M50 cause Karma (as you spoke about) is going to get you for this :P.

Really Pianoman. Welcome to Korg Forums! :)
I have the Oasys and well... for you graduating from a Casio wow... I mean thats like Caveman to King kind of thing. lol :D
Sit down and grab the Getting Started manual and read that thing through and through. It'll really give you a handle on the thing.
Also stop by karma-labs.com and I'm pretty sure they have a bunch of articles for the Oasys.
Good luck bro and enjoy your Palace! :)

OASYS

Post by John Hendry »

I still kick myself in the head for not getting one. I had the cash back then no problem but that will come around again soon enough. There is always something better about each major past Korg board that makes me hang on to them..all accept the OASYS.

You guys are lucky. I almost got the last one at GC for $5500 88 new in the box!! but my credit was dying due to lawsuit BS so got the M50 which is Great but sounds weak compared to OASYS. And only the OASYS.

I'll still probable end up with one somehow after all the thought about it but hoping Korg surpasses it soon WITH Poly AT as there is too much happening for ch AT. I tweak and then focus on time and Poly AT really lets me explore space better. Can't wait to get past the legal stuff I still live in. Karma is real so next area should be a lot better.
