This application allows KO-PRO performance MIDI data to be recorded, easily edited and played back from a digital audio workstation.

The biggest problem with the KO-PRO is that pitch and note on/off messages are transmitted and received as control change MIDI data when outside external control mode. Although data can be recorded into and played back from a DAW, it is very difficult to view or edit the note data. This application resolves the problem so that the note data can be viewed and edited in the DAW just as it can be with a standard MIDI keyboard or instrument. Hopefully Korg will address this issue in a future firmware upgrade, but until that time, I hope that users will find this application useful.

The application is designed with the use of the touch pad as the input specifically in mind. The application is not designed to work with a MIDI keyboard, although a keyboard can of course be used to enter data into the DAW and to control the KO-PRO within the parameters described below.

The application is designed to work within the following parameters.

Note ranges

One Octave
Two Octaves
Three Octaves
Four Octaves

The application is not designed to work in Prog or FULL note range modes. In FULL mode, the KO-PRO assigns different note ranges to each Program Name. The time required to analyse the data and design the program to provide this functionality is not justified given that this mode is more useful for creating effects rather than playing melodies.

Scales

Ionian
Dorian

Key

As on the KO-Pro.

System requirements.

The application works in conjunction with MIDI Yoke and MIDI OX which are freeware programs that can be downloaded from the MIDI OX website. http://www.midiox.com/

The application is written in Visual Basic 6 SP6 and has been tested on Windows XP SP3. I don't have access to Vista or Windows 7 so I don't know if it will work on these operating systems. If anyone wants to test it and let me know, that would be great.

I have tested it with Cubase Essential 5, SE and Powertracks ProAudio so I see no reason at all why it shouldn't work with other DAWs.

The application can be downloaded from http://www.englishhermit.net/kaosspro.html

Sounds really good. Not something I particularly need but I've no doubt many will.

However, isn't the Aeolian scale the minor scale? :P

My knowledge of music theory is somewhat limited. I'll take your word for it. It wouldn't take too long to add all the eight note scales so I may do it. Completing the whole set would be a bit more fiddly.

Like you originally suggested, the major and minor scales are certainly the best to start with. And I do believe it is the Aeolian that functions as minor in KPro world.

Why they didn't use normal people's terms for the basic ones, I don't know.

Ionian, Dorian, Aeolian are not actually scales but modes.

Modes still have to fit into a scale or key. For example to get the Dorian mode, you would play all the notes in C major but start and end on D instead of C.

But that is just typically. For example the Dorian mode you could also do the same in the key of D major (starting on E), D# Major (starting on F), etc...

I don't know how that applies to the Kaossilators because I don't have one.

Aeolian has always been the harmonic equivalent of the root key. For example Aeolian in the key of C major starts and ends on A. The A minor key contains all the same notes as the C major key, so they are equivalent.

C Aeolian = A Minor

I hope that helps to make a bit more sense.

I'll add the Aeolian mode.
