X + Y axis question

Post by Kingery »

If there is a thread for this, please point me to it.

I have purchased a Kaoss KP3 and love it so far. I'm trying to use it as a midi controller and so far in Logic 8 & 9, Absynth and Reaktor I'm having success except for one thing.

With midi learn, I can get X or I can get Y (for panning) but I can't get X and Y. For example, in an absynth surround panner, X or Y just gives me left and right. How do I get X + Y so that it moves the sound around the axis.

I've read and re-read the manual and I assume there is something I'm missing. So, again, if there is an old thread on this, please point me toward it. If not, please type very slowly so I understand your explanation

Thanks

actually, there are several different ways midi can be set up in external control mode. check them out, one may be to your liking - if i recall correctly use can get a midi out of the diagonal value and several other things. i think there are at least 5 x-y messages that can be sent (x, y, diagonal, left/right of center, up/down from center,)

I'm guessing that you want to control the surround pan/mix of a sound.

Any controller will only be one-dimensional, so what you're experiencing is correct. I'm thinking the solution will be in the synth and not the KP3. the 'pan' control will control one direction on the surround mixer, and you'll have a seperate parameter you need to assign/automate to the other axis on the KP3 to get the forward/back position.

x-trade has a point - i wasn't thinking that clearly when i responded last night. surround sound has both left/right and forward/back parameters, no? you would probably want to use x and y for this.

I'm please to say I have achieved X + Y heaven in Absynth 4 and Reaktor. It was simply a matter of making the CC numbers the same between the pad and the program. I'm a little slow sometimes.

Well, thanks for the help. Love to chat but the short bus just pulled up and I must run.
