New song done on Oasys, M3, and XS...

Post by UCanDream »

Hey every 1...

"U Can Dream" the CD (now properly entitled "You Can Dream" after its inception 18 years ago) is another song closer to completion. This particular song started off a year ago as about 8 bars of throw away jingling on the M3. My wife said, "What's that?" It was really nothing...and I didn't even wanna bother with playing it again because the chord progression is so horribly overdone (but aren't they all?). Anyway, I threw down the rough ideas on the M3 and returned to it about a year later, meaning just a few weeks ago, to finish it up. Maybe it still is nothing but my wife (who contributed some great ideas to the song) and I think it turned out well enough for the CD. So if ya wanna hear 'nothing' here's the link: http://www.supload.com/listen?s=mJjcdr

It's pretty well spiffed up (maybe with a couple little blurbs) but if anyone has any non-hateful critique I would certainly welcome it. Most of the lead guitars were done on the Triton EX. The Oasys is providing 16 tracks (interspersed, of course) of various textural sounds and the strings. Piano, drums and bass (and a few other items) are done on the M3. The bass glissando (played in 2 spots) was sampled off the Motif and turned into a proggie on the M3. Organs....Oasys, of course. Oh, last thought... song name: "Lingering."

Have a great weekend! :verycool:

Cheers.

Wow, that sounds wonderful. Really enjoyed that loads, well done mate.

Just some food for thought. This is in no way me saying I don't like something, I'm just going to give you some words based on listeners general preferences, wider audience tastes and researched and been thought over the years by some very clever musicians.

The Lead Guitar is the only instrument used in the entire track that drives the song instantly towards a certain type of listeners preferences. It's like with that single instrument you label your song for a specific listener when simply replacing it with a more generic and less mix cutting sound would instantly make it a more beautiful track to a wider range of listeners. Many people find that lead guitars in this kind of music burn their ears quickly.

As I said, this is just information that was passed onto me by some very clever musicians who I have the utmost respect for, and how I've listened to everything they said. It's a life time of work for them producing tracks like this that they share their experience with me. I always listen to them and make up my own mind, so I hope you can do the same here. You don't have to accept anything said. Just think about it.

Regards
James.

I sure hope this is a vocal tune… if so , wonderful arrangement !
If so,I look forward to hearing the vocal in a later version.

a) drums too far back in mix
b) guitar too far back in reverb

This is a track that would be wonderful to hear when mixed with a
SSL or Neve console in high dollar studio

Each part comes and goes beautifully driving things perfectly, Bravo !

Can you send me some of whatever is in the air in Colorado ?

Good song David! I like the layers and the structure. The song has a analogue quality to it that invites you to try and visualize the people playing the actual instruments. The piano work is particularily tasty. I vote you put it on the CD.

Hey SoulBe,

Thank you very much. That's cool that other keyboard players like this stuff.

Hi Sharp. Your insight is appreciated and held in high regard here. This is the kind of constructive critique that easily shapes the final touches on my project. I eat this stuff up because I believe that of everyone 'out there', I am going hear the most honest opinions of what my listener thinks right here from other musicians. Case in point, jgsidak suggested regarding a previously posted song of mine ("The Quest") that the lead guitar was "tonally too thin and too high in the mix; the EQ on it sounds harsh. It doesn't fit with all the other instrumental parts." Not only did I kind of agree with him but I also promptly replaced the offending lead guitar with a lead synth sound that I programmed on a Roland JX-10 (which I had just purchased on eBay). Ironically, I wrote that song on a JX-10 in 1987. I never thought that 23 years later I would be re-doing it....WITH another JX-10. By the way, since reading your comments I did go back and remove some guitar and replaced with another instrument. I'll let ya hear later. :-)

SCHWEATS, Thanks for pointing those items out. I gottem all fixed up. The song has most of the lyric set finished. It's actually a duet but I can't sing to save my life....lol. Good thing I bought a vocalizer. Hey, I haven't heard of SSL or Neve....I'll have to Google them. Thanks for your kind words.

Hey nitecrawler! How are ya doin' neighbor? Yep indeed, Lingering is set to be on the CD. Thanks much for your remarks. How coincidental, your take on visualizing the "guys" playing their instruments....I had made some comment to my wife about that very thing before I even posted the link here. That freebee site, Supload.com, was down for a while and I thought they actually closed down permanently. They're back up and running again but in the mean time I've been populating my web site. It (the site) is so nerdy right now that I'm embarrassed to let anyone see it yet....my wife and I are building it ourselves-- and we basically have NO clue what we are doing! Anyhoo, I am just finishing up "Leaves", a song I wrote in 1979. It was the very first song I ever copyrighted. I have the original sheetmusic (hand written) framed in the studio. I'll post some pics and drop the link to my site when it gets to looking a little better.

Thanks again guys for your helpful criticism and encouraging remarks.

Cheers.

I really tried hard ... but at the end failed, no critique possible. Great song, great playing. Looking forward to hear the vocals. Thank god I am not the person who needs to sing as the instrumental has already a very high level, trying to sing and keep the feeling and quality will not be easy... not at all.

Congrats my friend !!!!

peter

ps: .. and thx for the laugh concerning googling for SSL and Neve
