1) Select any initialised (empty) pattern
2) Assign sample to a Part
3) Select Part
4) Press some of those buttons at the bottom marked 1 - 16
5) Press Play
6) Listen

As has been said a few times, it's all in the manual.

Off the top of my head, I can't remember right now - but it's in the manual in the 'Parts' section

Press the Part button that you want to assign a sample to (the row of button marked 1/ST, 2/-, 3......SLICE) page 38 of the manual will explain that some parts can hold only certain types of samples.

Press the Part Edit button and make sure you are on the sample section (press up arrow 4-5 times to make sure).

Scroll through the different samples (using the big dial) while hitting the Part button to hear the sample.

Stop scrolling to assign the sample to that part.

Now you can program that sample by assigning when the sample will sound using the Step Keys (buttons 1-16 on the very bottom).

Play around man, it's the best way to learn. I had my ESX for almost 5 years before I even knew about this forum. The manual and my hands did all the teaching. Just try things out, hit some buttons, you won't break it

I guess I managed to chop and slice the preset patterns n save them to new patterns. I also tried to use the samples BUT most of them seem to be SLICE 1 -1 instead of ALL. So each time i choose a sample, have to go the SLICE ALL. Why they arent automatically on SLICE ALL mode?

I guess the STEP part is important because each time I play a sample for my own pattern n record it, the bar and the beginnig of the sample does not sound the way i played it.
DO i have to make BAR adjustments so that it starts at the right place?
Or just playin when i hit REC button?

This is a used machine it seems like workin well but sometimes
the keyboard parts sound strange (like bad sounds comin out) but then I may have using it wrong i dunno yet....maybe each time i have to adjust the SLICE option etc...

page 46

"Assigning a sample to a part"

use the PDF manual and learn to use the search feature of your PDF reader, if you press Ctrl-F then search for "assign" you'd find that on the Table of Contents

because they only need to be a slice sample if you want to assign them to the slice part. try using a different part, you can assign any sample to parts 1-7B

what I mean is :
there are some sampled piano n synth riffs.
I play n record them on top off my own pattern. But when I playback
my recorded pattern riff ; it plays a half-bar of the riff.
Each time i have to pick SLICE ALL then perform....
its strange... :?

you sound very confused, I'm not sure what you're describing so I don't know what you're doing - but you're doing it wrong

try using a keyboard part, not the slice part

Tip: go to youtube. Search for ESX tutorial (or somesuch), watch and then try to repeat what is being done in the video. This should give you the basics of how the machine works.

I recommended that also! Videos can be a better guide then text in some cases. Especially the building of a basic drum beat\pattern. :D

Im only takeing a stab as to what is happening here.

but there are times when i am riffing live , using the arp ribbon and i engage record... what happens after the "recording is I lift my finger off the arp and the first part of the pattern is silent.

what causes is seems to be due to the way the esx records "events" rather then "sound" therefore if I am already touching the ribbon BEFORE I arm record, the "note on" is never sent for the first note and therefore upon replay plays silence.

have you tried momentaraly breaking off your performace , then engaging record, then beginging to riff... I find once I do this it works well most of the time.

Or using the step record and note editing to sharpen up or add notes to a riff. It really helps a lot in my sloppy playing

I checked some videos last night on utube.
Figured out some stuff but still...
I am also scarad of a damage cause i bought this USED...
So sometimes when the keyboards make a strange sound other
than the sound it was supposed to do or when a sampl doenst playback the way i want it to be : i cant be sure its my mistake or of a possible damage...
