Thank you for the interesting videos. To tell the truth, the original still sounds better - as usual! (Hey, I've just played a Steinway D piano today in my son's music school - I don't have one at home. It was so much more sensitive and dynamic and colourful and joyful and... It's not news, we all know: NOTHING compares 100% to the real thing (acoustic piano, Rhodes, B3 etc.).

But when we have limited possibilities then we need an alternative solution - as good as possible. Fortunately, there are some. I find the OASYS EXs2 piano and electric pianos very good in many situations. I use Karo acoustic pianos as well sometimes. I bet Kronos will include even better pianos than OASYS and will be very usable.

Back to Rhodes, I've found other good videos about SV-1.

Comparisons:
1. KORG Sv1 vs Fender Rhodes
2. KORG Sv1 vs Fender Rhodes PARTE 2
3. Korg SV-1 vs. Rhodes Mark 2, Chorus On/Off

Other favourites of mine:
4. Calzolari e Mazzella dimostrano Korg SV-1
5. Sam, Angie and Sevan jammin at rehearsal
6. Bill Payne and the Korg SV-1 Stage Vintage Piano

More very good ones from all over the world:

Italy: demo korg sv-1 musical studio
Germany: KORG TV / SV1 gespielt von Andreas Gundlach / Killing me softly

I already moved my question to the Kronos forum after noting I'm in the leaper zone here

@Akos
First of all thanks for caring and taking the time to post examples!

I'm sorry, but I think that the examples rather prove the weakness of the SV-1 Rhodes, though they are obviously done to prove the opposite.

And one more thing was funny in those videos:
Some of the compared Rhodes were bad (tine) adjusted, weakening their dynamic strength and tone considerably. Still the SV-1 couldn't really compare.

Another one (the Mk II) was even in a dreadful maintainence state (example 3), and also in this case the SV-1 just delivered another artificial sounding clone.

If you compare these with the CP-1 presets from burningbusch's video or with Clavia Rhodes sounds, I recognize a big quality gap between those and the SV-1, the latter coming much less close from my view. It basically has that weak, undynamic "pling plong" sound without the warm sustain and velocity bite of the real Rhodes.

Anyway, in the Kronos forum it was clarified that EP-1 is definitely something else than SV1. I will have to wait to hear more Rhodes examples from EP1 and from the ROM of the Kronos.

P.S.
Akos, nice piano playing on "gone too soon".

Hi Jim,

First, thank you for your valuable and interesting opinion. Of course, as I wrote, I didn't want to convince you, just posted some examples for fair evaluation.

Second, that's not ME playing on that video! It's just the original title on YouTube.

Finally I find something more, two other musicians:
Greg Phillinganes and the Korg SV-1 Stage Vintage Piano
Frank McComb plays the Korg SV-1; Live at winter NAMM 2010

Lesson? They can play anything even on computers.
George Duke + Greg Phillinganes - "Behind the Scenes"

P.S. The CP1 sound settings of Burningbusch are enchanting, indeed!

Yes, as Spectrasonics user, I have seen the Greg and George Videos.
It's really fun watching these guys.

George Duke is one of my alltime keyboard heores, and I was lucky to have a short talk and handshake with him after his German Leverkusen Gig 2010.

And Greg Phillinganes is a real keyboard-licks master: always a pleasure to see and hear him treat any keys.

I guess the only way to keep the fire burning for four months of waiting time is to have some for Korg audio and video demos of the Kronos. Else it's going to be a looong time... ;-)

Absolutely. I'm afraid Korg don't have enough Kronos demo videos completed yet.

between :

Korg Oasys , Yamaha Cp series, Korg sv1 , Nord, Kurzweil or others .
With sound quality, effects (tremolo flanger delay etc..) and ease of use as top priority .

Thanks
Just my 2 cents fwiw, I've used the CP5 for some time now and know its sonic capabilities pretty well in a live context. I'd never really spent much time with the CP-1 (since they aren't in any LA music stores-BIG drag ) till last Sunday at NAMM. Overall I really dig the CP5 since I'm more concerned with APs, not EPs. But.....

Imo the rhodes on the CP1 is way superior to that on the CP5. Much more overall body and depth to the sound. The S6 grand is also superior to that on the CP5. The CF Grand is identical to these ears...but I digress.

I owned the SV-1 in the summer for a month and then sold it, unhappy with the lack of sustain on the APs. I originally thought the Rhodes and wurlis sounded very good when played by themselves but after numerous gigs I thought they didn't seem to lay as well in the mix live. I think the new soundpack 2 sounds improve the SV-1 all around, EPs & APs. I was going to re-buy it and then the Kronos was announced, so like everyone, waiting to see what that sounds like before I pull the trigger.

Also used the Nord Piano for about 4 months. The Rhodes were way more organic sounding and sat better in the mix then the Soundpack one SV-1 EPs. Haven't used the the SV-1 with the new sounds live so can't make a definite conclusion there. The Sparkletop Rhodes from the NP was outstanding. Also a feature that is often overlooked for live playing is the "mono" feature on the NP, probably the best I've ever heard on a keyboard. Saves me from schlepping two speakers (to get the more flattering stereo imaging) if I'm not in the mood. Loved the NP EXCEPT-- for the APs. Since that's what I mainly do in a Jazz context, it wasn't overall happening for me so back it went to AM&S unfortunately.

So for what I've used live I would rank the Rhodes has

1-Nord Piano
2-Sv-1
3-CP5

The Soundpack 2 might very well equal the Nord but again, I don't like to say for sure without using this stuff in heat of battle so to say.

I'm sure the CP-1 would be killer too, but I ain't schlepping 60 lbs. to find out.

"schlepping" sounds very German, despite your American name.

I'm a German and have been carrying around a Rhodes Mk I quite often.
"Schlepping" around hits the nail. The other band members would avoid direct eye contact after the gig, when the Rodes was packed. ;-)

Fortunately, I'm playing (O88) in a friendly band...

Thinking about getting some rhodes sounds, anyone tried the KARO KEP1? Looks like I can get a Nord electro rack used for about $800, anything else on it worthwhile if you got an O?

Yep - KEP samples are excellent and loopless. However, sometimes it seems to me 4 layers are not enough to reflect all the details of a real E-piano. :?
