No, OS updates are free to owners of Lionstracs Keyboard or the Rack.

When you own a lionstracs keyboard or rack, when you login to your account on the shopping cart the OS price is listed as €0.00.

Sharp.

No Nedim sorry :).

If the OS does not detect a Lionstracs hardware device, installation is aborted.

So why would anybody pay 380 Euros for this, if they don't have the hardware to go with it?

Sam I think Nedim was asking if he could buy the OS and just run it on a PC running Linux. Which is not possible.

It has been a question asked many times over the years, and it WOULD make editing etc etc a lot easier, but the OS will only run on a Lionstracs keyboard, or the soon to be released Groove XR Rack.

As for why anyone with Lionstracs gear would pay for it when all the updates are free, I don't know m8??

It has always been confusing the way the website lists the OS for sale, but it only works on a LS hardware device...It should simply list it as free download which is exactly how all registered owners get it :)

Hi Dennis, yeah, i knew why Nedim asking about it, but you kind of answered my question anyways. I also thought it was weird the way it was listed. That's all.

The OS5 distribution includes Lionstracs proprietary applications comprising Qranger, the Lionstracs Giga sound manager and Giga Sampler. These are not open source and are paid for when a customer buys a Lionstracs workstation. The ISO file also loads Linux Kubuntu 10.10 which is an open source free distribution.

If someone wants Kubuntu 10.10 to run on a laptop then the public free distribution is available from the Kubuntu web site. Any changes/ bug fixes that Lionstracs make are fed back to the public distribution.

There are also some misconceptions floating around about what the public are entitled to demand from developers and manufacturers when Linux is the OS. I have received a lot of help from Lionstracs developers on this. Let me clarify the situation with one example.

Qranger is a proprietary application software collaboration between Rui Capela and Lionstracs. It uses Rui's source code for Qtractor which Rui also kindly makes available to the public via an open source license. Lionstracs is a major financial contributor to keeping Qtractor functionality in step with Qranger. But the functionality in Qranger is much more than Qtractor. Whereas Qtractor is a fairly basic multi tracking sequencer, Qranger has the following proprietary functionality in addition:

It detects the chord/ key being played live.
It optionally pitch shifts audio clips in real time.
It optionally transposes MIDI clips in real time.
It provides 32 slots per file which may be looped, triggered by external controllers and by Lionstracs hardware.

With those extensions, Qranger becomes the heart of the Lionstracs open music backing engine. It permits the workstation to play arpeggiated accompaniments, complex backings and beats, and to play styles, intros endings etc all from sequencer based files created by the user from industry standard MIDI and audio sources.

Any use of 3rd party shared binary libraries by Qranger is performed in compliance with the LGPL 2 or later license. LGPL 2 permits proprietary / commercial applications to be developed. Use of 3rd party LGPL 2 libraries does not require the source code for Qranger to be open source. The mechanisms for linking with LGPL 2 libraries do not require the use of shared header files, and no open source files are used within Qranger.

So what about the inclusion of source files from Qtractor when Qtractor is available via a GPL 3 license? Well, Qtractor is owned by Rui Capela who can do what he likes with his own property. Rui is very generous making some of the functionality available via a GPL 3 license to the public, but the whole functionality of Qtractor plus extensions written by Rui for Qranger is also made available in a private license with Lionstracs.

about Qtractor and Qranger source

Qtractor is opensource, (opensource does not always mean free software)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software

but Qranger is opensource+ commercial licence from zplane
becouse élastique used by lionstracs for audio tracks is not opensource.

http://www.zplane.de/index.php?page=references

Domenico always said he can and he made already the Qranger part that used opensource code available for public and opensource software developers, but he can not and he is not allowed to make zplane élastique code available for public and opensource software developers becouse of commercial license).

many MS users including me payed 80 euro to download the first O.S release included Qranger+ zplane élastique (80 euro for commercial license ) and lifetime free O.S updates (in this free updates are not included other commercial licensing if Lionstracs in the future decided to use more commercial license or different license then zplane élastique).

now when you buy a Lionstracs rack or keyboard you have also zplane élastique license and you can also download O.S updates for free. :) :) :) :)

Thanks m8, I have already sent a reply to you.

In any case it is all settled now, so no need for any further comment.

I would add though AFG, that I was told about this in a PM, and not publicly so I will still keep it confidential. I am hoping that the person that did say it made a mistake.

Thanks my friend for your message.

Hi Sharp,
I'd visited the forum before, but looks like their forum is not there anymore:

http://www.lionstracs.com/forum/index.php

I logged in and wanted to download OS 5, but it still shows the balance in the shopping cart.

Sam it will just be a glitch on Domenicos website. Or he has forgotten to authorise your account.

Just send him an email explaining you are still set-up as a paying account for updates.
