OASYS Resource Usage in Songs Question

Hi -

Does anyone know whether Programs allocated to tracks in Songs use up any OASYS resources if:

- in Track Parameters they are turned "off"
- in Track Parameters they are turned "on" but never actually used?

I suspect that tracks with CX3 Programs use oscillators even when not played. Do they use oscillators even if turned off? what about the other EXi types?

I'm looking for a clear picture on OASYS resoruce usage in Songs, in order to minimise usage on unused tracks.

Thanks,
Kevin.

Sharp -

I accidently entered this post on the Latest News instead of the OASYS forum - I'd be grateful for you to move it!

Thanks,
Kevin.

If that's the psychological effect on grown men of a 10-seconds teaser,

I'd hate to see what a Moog Music 5-seconds teaser saying "hey, you: the Dodo is coming. Beware!" could produce.

This should help: in the PDF of the Parameter Guide, search for CX-3, and then click on the 16th hit (CX-3 & STR-1: Limitations on EXi fixed resources).

Hi Dan -

Thanks a million. I'll check that out for sure.

I just completed my first job using only the OASYS. It was a massive learning experience, despite my otherwise OK knowledge of OASYS. I pushed the instrument to the absolute limit - beyond the note count limit - pushing tracks to Audio to get voices back (and worked a treat), mixed on the OASYS - the works. I was up at 5am yesterday morning (the job took 4 days of 16 hours a day, a final 20 hour day and then yesterday from 5am to delivery at 13.00.

At about 10.00 the OASYS hung - I was ready to top myself - I had saved versions of the piece in directories too deep and though I'd lost audio tracks when I rebooted - only to discover that what was happening was that the song tracks were being saved to external hard disk fine but when I'd copy it over to the internal hard disk I was copying too deep in the file system and the audio tracks were not copied across. I realised after about 45minutes of sheer panic that if I copied the job from the external hard disk to a more shallow internal hard disk folder then all was OK

And - I found a bug (can't quite describe it now but it's a mix up between the tempo setting and song locations - in certain circumstances choosing the song location sends the song to a bar matching whatever tempo the song is at. I reproduced it several times but will need to do a detailed retest). Not that bugs are fixed but it'd be worth describing and it's rare - it will not occur very often.

But boy did the OASYS deliver - it delivered a huge piece (with variations) with awesome sound and all under the hood - not a smidgen of an outside device used. I've learnt a huge amount about optimising workflow, and about my own work flow - but that's why I decided to do this work under the OASYS hood alone - it was stressful near the end but ultimately the OASYS revealed vast hidden depths I simply had not 'tested' or pushed for before. a truly 'great' instrument - I really mean that.

Finally, I can feel in the piece the 'might' of the OASYS - including its keyboard - it really delivered and I'm over the moon.

Here's a pointer to a quick mix of one of the variations of the piece (to let the client hear - this is very bass heavy - and I delivered the final pieces with mastering in Adobe audition). I'll leave this link up for a few days but will pull it quite shortly (no major issues - I retain copyright on this particular job; its just a rough mix I don't want to leave up). It'll give you a sense of the depth and breadth of the OASYS in a full electronic-type job:

So I'll definitely check out your pointer to get to learn even better how OASYS manages resources - thanks!

WOW! I mean it, Kevin. Just downloaded and listened, then listened again.

Then I listened again.

WOW! Great stuff and absolutely inspirational. Not only that, but a great composition along with great 'acoustic vision' (if that's not mixing metaphors or something!).

Am delighted to hear this kind of music being produced a) from you and b) from a world-leading instrument - with all the flaws that people moan about - it can produce this kind of work.

WOW! Thank you so much for sharing :)

Crikey Cello - thank you so much for the great encouragement and very kind words. I am actually quite pleased with the piece. It's to accompany a piece of interactive video at Ireland's national young scientist exhibition, where visitors can type in a message to be transmitted live to a star of their choosing via a small radio telescope at the wonderful Blackrock Castle Observatory (www.bco.ie), in Cork, Ireland (and the visitor gets to see the radio telescope live via screen actually rotate towards the star and their message transmitted!). Reall ycool.

So the piece had to be futurist and electronic. But I retain copyright of the music on this job (costs low!) and am considering doing something with this piece, say as part of a released work I'm working on, or for a live event of music and space imagery I've been planning for a while and hope to have ready for autumn 2011.

Thanks again!
Kevin.

Thank you very much for sharing this - in WAV format! 72 MB but worths to download. It's interesting music that transmits a definite astronomic mood. Also a unique piece: composed and finished on OASYS only.

I bet the lead sound is one of your original Programs called "Ethnic Pluck" or "Ethnic Harp". It's included in the great UG0106_1.PCG soundset that is freely downloadable from your website. :verycool:

P.S. Somehow I experienced this in different circumstances: at the end of exceptionally long and complicated works the computers might freeze in the very last moment... Who knows, maybe they're joking with us... :D

P.S. I just checked the Blackrock Castle Observatory (www.bco.ie). Wonderful!

Best regards,
Akos
