Editor software problem

Post by Nelly the Electron »

Hi, I wonder if anyone else has not been able to get their M3 to talk to their PC. I have installed the drivers from the disc for XP and Vista and the latest version for Winmdows 7 but though the M3 appears as a piece of audio hardware it will not recognise midi messages from the computer.
I've tried all the installations as suggested on the manuals but have had no luck. Has anyone experienced this and have they found an answer or is it a problem with the system of the M3, any help would be appreciated.

Some ideas:
1) You did not say what OS you use, but generally installing too many drivers does not help, I'd just use driver for your OS version and in Korg M3 case - uninstall all other Korg MIDI-USB and install latest available at Korg.com site (should be currently 1.1.2 for PC).

2) In some windows systems (xp) there is limitation of allowed MIDI devices. If you have tried much and pc setup is old enough, this can be problem. there are many articles teaching to fix this (google "XP too many midi devices" or something).

3) Try always use the same MIDI port connecting your gear. Windows tends to install separate driver instance when you connect device to another port. this also contributes to problem mentioned in p2)

4) When you install Korg MIDI driver it also installs Korg Midi Driver tools. Here are utility to remove driver, install driver and configure attached devices. In configuration utility there is button "device list" that should show attached Korg devices. You must see your gear there before you can install any USB/MIDI driver to it.

5) With M3 (that uses High speed USB bus) I had once problem with USB cable. My device list showed M3 OK, but MIDI activities hung after actually start using M3. Replacing USB cable to quality and shorter one helped.

6) For PC application to interact properly with external midi gear you need ensure proper internal (in PC) midi routing. Many PC applications (usually advanced ones) require special configuration to show where (to which PC midi device) it sends its MIDI signal. Other (simple) applications (like windows media player, capable to play midi files) send its midi to windows default midi device, you need to set up proper default midi device in OS control panel then.

Many thanks for your advice Alland, I actually have a refurbished PC which came with all sorts of programs installed who I've never heard of so maybe that's the problem. The editor is purely a convenience so not having it will in no way detract from my enjoyment of the instrument.
Thanks again for your detailed and helpful reply.
