Sequencing on the m3. Need some tips.

Post by rbalaa »

I've been using the built-in sequencer. I'm getting used to the edit menus, but still not that comfortable.

Is there any editing program I can use that will allow me to use my computer (with a mouse) and save the changes to the M3 ?

Or is the only way to have the advantage of a mouse and keyboard is by going with software (like Logic) ?

Any sequencing tips would be appreciated here. Thanks.

The only way is: export the song as a midi file to any software sequencer, edit it, save it as midi file, load it into the M3.

I am afraid that's it.

There's no way of accessing the m3 sequencer from a computer editor

However, you can still use software to do the 'sequencing', but use the M3 over USB/MIDI for its sounds.

This is how i do most of my sequencing - those DAW's like Logic, Sonar, and Cubase have a lot of fancy software synths and effects, but they were originally designed to work with hardware-based synthesizers. They still work really well with them, and you can accomplish tasks a lot quicker and do much deeper editing with a DAW as opposed to the M3's internal sequencer. Plus, you won't get pain in your back from hunching over the M3's screen :P

just some general workflow tips when using a software-based sequencer with the M3...

You can use the user templates in SEQ mode to store your FX settings. I use user templates U00, U01, and U02 for my defaults. You can sequence away to your hearts content in SEQ mode, and as you make changes to your FX settings, you can save your song FX settings in one of the user templates in the back (U14, U15, etc). The next day when you go to work on your project some more, just load up template U15, and all your FX (and any other track settings) are conveniently loaded up.

When you're ready to transfer your sequence to the M3's sequencer, you can title the sequence in the software sequencer, save it to a format 1 standard MIDI file (*.mid), and then load it right into the song which that template is in. All your FX settings will remain in tact, and the title will even appear correctly. Just keep in mind, when you load a standard MIDI file, it leaves MIDI messages at the beginning of every track for program change, controllers 7, 10, 91, and 93. You may wish to delete these, so you can change them in the main SEQ page later.

I prefer to use a software sequencer most of the time... but when you do this, KARMA and RPPR are not really available to you unless you mess around with some MIDI settings (huge pain in the butt). If you need to use these, you can just save your unfinished sequence as a SMF, load it into the M3, and do your work there. Wish there was another way around that! (if anyone has any suggestions, i'd love to hear)

Hope these are helpful to you.[/i]
