Sampling and Re-Sampling on the OASYS

Post by BARRY CRAIG »

I've never been into doing much of my own sampling--it's hard enough to construct music from other sample libraries and make my own personal tweeks.

I've been reading the Korg Parameters book and still am unclear about what they refer to regarding "resampling."

Can anyone clarify the difference and what you gain or lose doing either? Is it a fairly straight forward process without much hassle?

Thanks!

Resampling is just a way to capture Audio from the main outs of the Oasys, for instance if you wanted to free up IFX processing power but still wanted fx on a sound you can sample a sound with all the FX on,then assign that sample to a program and add further efx if you so wish or you can sample outboard sounds through the Oasys mixed with internal sounds and FX resample those to create new timbres.

or say for instance you needed a drum sound with loads of compression on or eq,and would like to use it as a sample rather than keep it tied to IFX you could do all the fx processing you need for that drumsound then resample it,and assign it to a drumkit and have the processing on the sample without being tied to limited fx processing that you may need for other tracks.

normally what I use resampling for on the Oasys is layering several Kicks or snares together then resampling the output so they are captured as only one sample, its a way of beefing up sounds without having to be tied to layering tracks in combis etc,

Resampling can be a way of freeing up polyphony as well so you could resample a combi playing chords and just trigger it with one note to which the sample is assigned to.

Whether your into sampling or not is personal choice for me its a way of creating sounds that are not acheiveable with the usual methods of creating songs and also a way of creating unsual experiments and unique sounds of your own.

Thanks for the info... are you saying one must go through the sampling inputs first to make it into a sample through the 1/4" sample line inputs, trim it to whatever yours needs are? Then, once the sample is trimmed, you then can re-sample with whatever effects you might want?

Sorry, just double checking so I can be clear on all this...

Hi,

you don´t have to physically connect the output jacks with the samling inputs. There is a tap in every program/combie where you can configurate, that the audio outputs are resampled within the O. I´m not in front of my Oasys but if you search the topics I´m sure there must be a topic on the forum about it.

best regards

BTW: Do you have the "unofficial OASYS Tutorial DVD" from Mike Conway? It is really worth it and shows a lot of the O that is undiscovered ;-)

Yes, I have that DVD that Mike Conway did. I'll have to look at it again. I think he covered some things about sampling in there somewhere. He told me he's working on another one--there's a lot he was not able to cover--the O is so deep!

Thanks again,
Barry
