Connecting KP3 with Nord Electro for live effects at gigs

Post by chillljam »

Hi guys,

As the title states, I want to have the KP3 mounted next to my keyboard during gigs and be able to use it's effects on my keyboard sounds.

I am having trouble finding a practical way to hook this all up.

Normally, I would connect Nord Electro ---> DI ----> mixer -----> Korg KP3 through effects loop (on the mixer).

Now the problem is, for bigger gigs the mixer could be very far away so this is not an option. Another problem is that the KP3 only has RCA line in and line out whilst the keyboard only has 1/4" TRS outputs and the DI usually only has 1/4" TRS and/or XLR input with XLR output.

Ideas are greatly appreciated!

Hello, chillljam!
why don't you get 2 double RCA - double 1/4 TS Jack cables?
the short one to connect electro to KP3, and the longer one to send the output of KP3 to the mixer

Thanks manjeroque,

This could work, however... generally how things work on stage is that there are connections to the side of the stage for balanced XLR's that goes through a multicore to the mixer which can be 100+ ft away.

So basically, I need to give the sound engineer a male unbalanced XLR connection that they can connect to the XLR connections on the stage.

I am not concerned with retaining a stereo keyboard signal so a signal chain that could work....

Nord Electro ---(via 1/4 TS Jack to RCA cable)----> Korg KP3 ------ (via RCA to 1/4 TS cable) ----> DI box (or buy a DI box that has RCA input) -----> mixer (via balanced XLR cable)

How does that look?

well, i just don't know what the "DI box" is  , but it looks ok if you need a long balanced connection)

A D.I converts a high impedance, unbalanced line level signal (like a keyboard, guitar, KP3, bass guitar) into a low impedance balanced signal (like that of a microphone) so you can plug it into a mixer that has low impedance balanced inputs.

This is essential for me because I always plug into a PA through a mixer instead of into a keyboard amp (which has inputs designed for high impedance, line level signals).

Back to the OT, just thinking that another option could be to have a small mixer just for the keyboard (I usually only play one keyboard so this has been unnecessary in the past). If the mixer has balanced outputs I could just run my usual setup of keyboard into DI into mixer then just run balanced outs from the mixer to the main mixer.

I would like to avoid this as the less stuff I have the better (that's why I got the nord electro in the first place... portability).

There are connection diagrams are on pages 8 and 9 of the manual for the Kaoss Pad 3:

If you wanted to use it as an external effects processor (i.e. not in-line between the Nord and the mixer), you would need to have your own compact mixer to handle the routing.

Yep, just as I thought... seems there is no other way.

I would prefer just putting the KP3 in-line rather than going through a mixer.

Thanks for your help
