Hi: I know there are some people on this forum who have bought and used the ASSAULT library for the OASYS. This is one beautiful sound library, but unfortunately, comes with some technical problems, that I'm hoping more experienced users may have dealt with successfully. In addition to ASSAULT, I also purchased the KSC GEN add-on, which helps to deal with the fact that you can pick and choose "favorites" and just load those thus saving sample memory (the total samples for the entire library are 1.5GB).

However, I've run into difficulties saving those changes, so that makes it difficult to save a custom version.

Mostly, I blame Korg for not providing options for "Load one program" and "load samples with program?"This could have been a perfect use of the function button which to this day, does nothing ("reserved for future use").

I would love to hear how people have dealt with these issues. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Hi Barry.

Our email exchange is for the most part entirely based on instructing you on how to operate the OASYS with the added learning curve of how KSC GEN gets around a problem caused by the “Load PCG and RAM” option on the OASYS for those wanting to customise what they load into the OASYS.

So there's no actual technical issue with the library it's self, its a cross between helping you learn how to operate the OASYS, and over come issues like your Memory Stick not working.

So to summarise.......
1: You have successfully loaded the library off the DVD with ease.

2: Next you wanted to speed up the loading times, so you have successfully copied the DVD to the Internal HDD and are now able to successfully load it direct from the hard disk.

3: You have installed KSC Gen on your PC, selected your favourite sounds, printed out your choice and even generated the new KSC file which you have also copied to the OASYS.

4: You have successfully used the list and OPEN option in disk mode and loaded your favourite sounds.

5: You have successfully loaded the new KSC file and your custom library is now sitting in memory.

So... you now only need to know how to save the data. Which is the only thing I did not cover in the video or instructions I sent you.

At the stage your at now, you simply need to save the PCG file to disk by going to disk mode, then to the SAVE Page, and then to the save menu by touching the Tab in the top right of the screen.

From there simply select “Save PCG” and your done.

When you turn off the Power to the OASYS and switch it on the next time, the ONLY file you need to load is the KSC file you made with KSC GEN. This will load the samples back to memory and make your custom selection of sounds work again.

This must be done as the OASYS forgets all sample data when the power is switched off.

So, does that cover the complete state of play at this point ? Anything missing that needs covering ?.

I know it's confusing when you get to the stage of wanting to create a custom version of a Sample library, but look at it this way. Without KSC GEN the process is so freaking complicated that it's only something very advanced users attempt and it will take them countless hours of hard work.

KSC GEN simplifies the process to clicking on the sounds you want, printing a list, copying the KSC file the software generates to the OASYS. On the OASYS you then use the OPEN option to load the sounds off you list, and then you load the new KSC file.

Done...!!!

OASYS ASSAULT is the only library for KORG keyboards that has such a tool available. Buy any other library and you have to do an insane amount of tough manual work in order to achieve what KSC GEN does in just moments.

If I could write a universal version of it I would. It would sell like hot cakes.

Sharp: You're one of the founders of this group. Since 2002--pre Oasys by three years! I salute you,sir, for your generous help that you've given others. As wonderful as it sounds, there's a lot of technical improvements that for the price, are missing. You'd know better working with these issues since you've had to face them since the advent of the OASYS in 2005. If Wikipedia is to be believed, only about 3000 were made.

Briefly, you have surmised my problem in saving ASSAULT programs in a custom format. So all I have to do is save the ASSAULT library to the PCG file and then recalling it through the the PCG file to recall it. Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

For all the time and money they spent on this 'board, why couldn't they make this essential keyboard tool available? Does the Kronos do it any better?

Sharp: It blows my mind how hip and sophisicated the OASYS is, and yet how lacking it is in the basic functions. Why would anyone else want to buy a Korg Library knowing there is massive bussing of samples involved? I have several sample libraries (Akai Native, K2000 Native format) which will load into the OASYS, but I don't know what the results will be.

I personally wouldn't put much faith in what Wikipedia has to say on this. It maybe true, but I can guarantee you that the only people that know are very specific people in KORG. It's not public knowledge.

The KSC file is the only file you will have to load into the OASYS each time you turn on the power as the OASYS will forget all samples stored in RAM.

The only reason to save a PCG file is so you have all your favourites in one file and that in the event you overwrite them, you can quickly reload them.

I don't know. All KORG keyboards that have a Sampling function work the same way. It was actually by pure accident that I came up with the idea for KSC Gen. I've been using KORG keyboards all my life and it's only in the last 2 years I came up with the idea.

Now... if I could only figure out how to write a universal edition that would work with any Sample Library

Nope... all KORG's use the same sample management system. Except arrangers, they have even less function.

It's just always been that way. If you buy a library and you load it straight, then there's no issue as every is loaded to memory. It's only when you want to load your favourites and clear out memory for additional data is when it gets super complicated.

No KORG keyboard can check what it's already loaded to memory, so I wrote KSC Gen to solve that problem.

I have several sample libraries (Akai Native, K2000 Native format) which will load into the OASYS, but I don't know what the results will be.

Funny enough, AKAI S1000 S3000 format loads well if you are loading sounds folder by folder, not one by one.

Sharp: My issues continue with the ASSAULT library. My understanding was that if I created a custom list via KSC GEN, and put it into the right directory, then the custom version would be loaded.

Still having problems with this--I load the entire library, then Load KSC GEN, to the ASSAULT library file. Sometimes it takes, sometimes not. Should I be loading my KSC GEN file to another folder, and if that works, which file do I save of custom sounds? More importantly, which file do I access the custom library later on?

No..
Copy the new KSC file you made with KSC Gen to the same folder on your OASYS where the original KSC file for OASYS ASSAULT is located.

Now simply load the new KSC file.

This will tell the OASYS to only load the samples for the sounds you selected as your favourites in KSG Gen.

If you want to load the entire library at a later date, then simply load the original KSC file. Both files will happily sit in the same folder.

My understanding from your video was that the editted KSC file was to be placed in the top folder just labeled "Assault". Correct? Once I've loaded the custom version, must I use a save operation to keep it there in the Assault folder?

No, it's not a replacement file. You can keep both.

No, you don't have to if you don't want to. The new KSC file you generated in KSC Gen will always only load the required samples from the main library.
