S/P DIF into digital multitracker (D3200)?

Post by CfNorENa »

After some hesitation, I think I'm back on the Kronos bandwagon (had flirted with the idea of a Motif XF, but then came to my senses!).

I'll be recording the K. and my other hardware synths into a Korg D3200, and was wondering if I would be able to monitor/record the Kronos directly from its S/P DIF output into the digital input of the D3200. I've read through the manuals, and I can't find any reason why I can't. The reason I want to do it this way isn't about bypassing the A/D conversion on the D3200, but rather to conserve the line inputs on the D3200 for my other synths (I HATE having to plug/unplug all the time); otherwise, I'll have to add a small line mixer to my rig (don't have quite enough to warrant a patchbay).

So, trusted users and experts, any reason why I can't or shouldn't connect the Kronos to the D3200 via the S/P DIF connections?

Hey there - I have both units myself and I will do a test for you today!

I'll keep you posted.

should work fine, see page 44 of the D3200 manual.

Hey just realized, the display on the D3200 and Kronos share the same "so damn small I need glasses" font.
Kronos is 24 bit, 48kHz

wow, this would breath new life into the D3200 for me.

Have you done this? Looks like a fairly simple mod.

Thanks jamsire for the heads up!

@jamsire: thanks. I'll eagerly await the results! Yes, both the D3200 and Kronos manuals make it seem like it should be possible. But when I asked the same question at the studiotrax forum (dedicated to standalone, digital multitrackers, with lots of traffic on the "Korg" tab), there was some discussion of sample rates, destroying files, losing memory, and all sorts of mayhem if it weren't set up properly; the conclusion there seemed to be that it wasn't worth it...

As for 2Seemy, oh yes, that will be the first thing I buy once I acquire my D3200!

I will certainly make sure I test it out today then once I have gone through all my remaining tasks for the day.

I have the Tascam DM4800 digital mixer as well, so I may be looking at "2" 2Seemy's!
