Auto generated instrument definition files

Post by michelkeijzers »

I'm currently busy with writing instrument definition files to be automatically generated in PCG Tools. So everyone can create their own definition files depending on their own PCGs.

However I would like to ask some questions:
- Would you like it to be sorted by category or by bank? I assume category seems most logical
- If someone has a definition file for the Kronos, please mail it or PM me for email.
- I'm thinking of generating
- cubase (.txt) patch file
- cakewalk (.ins) file
- protools (.xml) file
Do I miss some or is this the majority of sequencers used?
- PCG Tools reads PCG files which do not contain GM banks. Do you consider this a problem (no category/names of GM will be generated, only numbers)? Of course you can add it manually.
- And the most important question: would you like this? (I know at least a few people being interested but it takes some time to create so when there is not much response I will postpone at least some parts).

Hi Michel,

Excuse me for my lack of knowledge, but what are instrument definition files? Are they related to software sequencers for a DAW?

Yes.

They allow you to choose sounds in your DAW based on the patch name, rather than having to know the bank/program number.

Personally, I think dividing by Categories is the best way to go about it.

Thanks for the explanation. So if I understand it correctly, those CuBase, Cakewalk and Protools files you're talking about, can be imported by those programs to connect the bank numbers to the patch names.

Does this only work for program names btw, or also for combi's?

I was hopping that the Editor that will be released will do this. Actually I was assuming that one could acces all the parameters in Kronos from any DAW....

Good point ... I don't know actually if this is the case. It would be nice if someone from Korg (Dan) could confirm this ... otherwise I'm doing duplicate work and that is not my intention.

I don't know much about instrument definition files, but never saw a combi in these. If someone knows it is possible, please let me know.

The editor will allow us edit and to save what we are using in the daw, no need anymore for a instrument file . I was you i would wait for it then if it does not do enough, you could develop your generator

Thanks for all the work you are doing michel, and it may still come in handy for those that won't use the editor.
Dan can jump in here, but from what I know coming from the M3:

Yes, with the Kronos editor, you will be able to select programs/combis on screen and have them reflect this in the Kronos UI and then be saved with your DAW file..
Open the file tomorrow and all will be loaded to daw and Kronos. Probably very much like the M3 editor feature..

The reason I added (in my development version) the cubase version was because that one was very easy to make (except for the GM so some manual action is needed).

However, it looks like it will be obsolete anyway so then I can better continue with other improvements.

I'd love it if you'd pick up this idea again. Reason is that the Kronos plugin for DAWs only allows for one instance of the instrument. I use Pro Tools and want to use the sounds from my Kronos working in midi.

Sorry, just found out that the Kronos Editor 2 autogenerates midnam-files.
However the file doesn't seem to work with Pro Tools 10 :(
