Switching the Kaossilator pro's arpeggiator on the fly

Hey all,

I've perused the Kaosilator pro manual and I've seen no warning about switching between speed and time for the ARP while the unit is on. I held my breath and tried it and while nothing blew up I noticed something weird when I switched back.
I like to use speed for setting up my rhythm loops, and time for getting funky with the lead. When I switch from speed back to time it seems like I lose the "depth" of the time feature. It's either all off or all on with very little differentiation. Turning the unit off then back on works but then I have to reload all my loops and by then the funkiness is lost!
Is my kaossilator the only one that has this flaw? I bought it used and I have violated it many times so perhaps it's just me.
Thanks for any input!

whatever you have the time or speed set to when you switch over is saved...so if your speed is really long, then you switch to time, all of your notes will be really long and you'll lose some of the effect

Bummer but not a huge deal. I usually make my rhythm loops separately. I'll have to rule out improv starting from scratch but I'm not that good so it dosen't matter anyway  . Perhaps Kaossilator 2.....

Thanks for the info, very helpful.

i dont understand why that keeps you from doing what you want...i'm just saying that with a really long gate time, the gate speed will not be as noticeable because the long notes blend together...you can switch the time to shorter and then the speed changes will sound like more distinct beats for each division

Maybe I'm doing things wrong. (wouldn't be the first for me)
I set the ARP for speed and select a drum or bass. Speed allows me to set rigid timing for the notes. For example 1 is a quater note .5 is an eighth, etc. If I just tap a rhythm with the pad and no ARP, I'm usually off with the loop and even a little off is noticable. So the ARP is kinda like autopilot for me. (again I'm more engineer than musician)
So with a nice bass line going I'd like to then switch to time. When I'm using a lead like L015 I use the ARP and slider to create a "whammy bar" effect. I lose this when I switch on the fly. Check out this video:

At 1:30 is where he whammies.
I want to be this guy! lol
I just need to make my samples before hand that's all...right?

Either way the Kaoss products are great!
Thanks

Hey ToughDuck-

Do have the KP-3 by chance? If you do, this post will be of great use to you:

I had a thread here at some point trying to promote the really cool advantages of using the KP3 midi to your K-Pro...but it didn't really take off well so it is buried somewhere here in the threads. But one of the key issues was solving that exact "flipping from speed to time". I have a few different set-ups with my Kaoss Set but the most basic set up is that the KP-3 x axis is used to control the speed and the y axis is used to control the time. The advantages were that I was able to the give programed automation through pad motion on the KP-3 as well as never having to touch the switch on the back. I never wanted to deal with the switch because that part is fragile and they do ware out.

Since the KP-3 does deal with sound there is also effect management on the KP-3 side and i explain tricks around that in my past posts on this...I think a year ago?...but if you can can find my post on this it will really help you out a lot.

Hey SMK,

Actually I do have a KP-3! I'll poke around on here tonight to find the posting. I take it involves midi controls? I hope so. I made a cable with the intent of synchronizing the beats of the K-pro and KP3. Now this will be the catalyst to get me going.
Thanks and I'll let you know what happens.

before you switch on the fly, make sure your gate time is short and then the gate speed will be more noticeable....i don't know how else to explain it

the "whammy" effect you are hearing is coming only from that particular sound he is using...each time it is retriggered by the arp, it has a slight bend at the beginning of the note.

The best way for me to learn seems to be by playing with it. I found the sweet spot for me. Switch between 50 on the time and .25 on the speed or vice versa. If I set the slider to this point when I switch, the effects I'm looking for are still there. I've always had plenty of time (at least 8 counts) to switch so accuracy with the slider won't be an issue. I'll paint a small mark on the K-Pro to get me close. Thanks guys, I probably wouldn't have figured it out without you. I'm still going to hook up the midi between the K-pro and KP3 as it looks like there's some fun to be had there.

Thanks again!
