Sudden REBOOT and after SYSTEM STARTUP FAILED

Post by xtatty »

I have a Kronos-73 approximately 2 months. I bought it with 1.0.4 version and recently updated to OS 1.5.
The update went down smoothly with no problems at all. Since the update i haven't had any other problems till now!

I was in the studio recording my bands album.
I was in Combi mode with a patch i created with German Piano + Strings + a Pad.
The plugged cables were the Power cord, the L+R Jacks, a round (5pin) midi cable in 'Midi Out' port and the Damper Pedal. No usb devices.
Note that i always use a UPS with Kronos so the reboot was not due to power failure.

The reboot happened when i was not playing anything and touching nothing!
The reboot occurred about 2 minutes after i stopped playing!

On the reboot, the boot up screen stuck for a while to the point that the red line is under the letter 's'
of the word 'Music' and then i got the message 'SYSTEM STARTUP FAILED'.

I unplugged it, waited for about a minute and then turned it on again.
It stuck again for a while under the letter 's' (more than it does usually)
but fortunately passed that point and completed the boot!

I tried it one more time and it booted normally.

Has anyone else experienced something like that with 1.0.4 version or after the 1.5 update?

Hi xtatty,

I experienced it only once in 1.04 and I have had Kronos since June. I have not experienced it again and 1.15 works like a charm.

Ahimsa,
Vlad
Current gear: Kronos, Jupiter 80, Kurzweil PC3,Roland Fantom X8, Roland XV-88 (yep, its old, but the ACTION is heaven and those XV-3080 sounds are still wonderful for me), Radias-R, Motif ES (yeah it's older but I love the guitars ;) )

Thank you for the answer.
Did it happen while you where playing or when doing nothing?

This sounds like it might be an intermittent hardware issue, unfortunately. I'd recommend taking it in for service.

I've had that happen a couple of times. Once with 1.0.4 and once I'm fairly sure was after I installed 1.5. I went out of the room for like and hour or so. When I came back it was stuck at the boot screen.

Just tonight I came across a crash which I reproduced three times in a row. But apparently it turned out to be caused by the USB thumb drive I had plugged in because after I pulled it out things worked normally again. (Then I put it back in and things still worked normally.) All I had to do was start recording MIDI by pressing ENTER and REC/WRITE. Then press START/STOP and START/STOP again without playing anything. Freeze. But since I can no longer reproduce it I guess it's not important.

I don't remember if I had a USB stick plugged in when the unattended reboot occurred. But I guess Kronos and USB sticks don't always get along---I've had the boot process sometimes fail with a message saying to unplug any USB devices and reboot. So I do....and it does.

Same here. I've my K61 for the same length of time and have had just one instance of the Kronos behaving this way. It has not done so since, even after upgrading to 1.5.0. I can't explain it and since it only happened once there's no way to tell what caused it or re-create the issue (which is fine with me).

All I will say (file under: hind-sight-is-2020): make sure to keep backups of your work stored someplace safely away from the internal SSD! I lost 3 custom patches and that was enough to teach me a valuable lesson...

That having been said: best of luck and enjoy the Kronos! Cheers!
