I wasn't able to get your link to work, but I'd be interested in checking out what alternatives can be used in place of the 12AX7s.

FYI, my EMX is the SD version, and I think it's got the same level of line noise from what I can tell...no noticable difference, but they were all fairly hissy when I got them. When I get my 2nd SX (SM with default tubes) back I might record a side-by-side comparison.

What you said about the outputs is absolutely true. I keep all 3 dials on each of my 'tribes set to about 10 o'clock (~30 percent or so) which seems optimal.

See what's available in your area and check some reviews on them.

hi, i looked at my link and saw what the problem is. underneath corrected version.
He s the article, i advise reading about tubes on more audiophile websites instead of the guitar amp scene, since i think the full spectrum of the korg is somewhat different to guitar. There s more factors to evaluate; wish i knew the voltage or current the korg gives to the tubes (i have not much electronic knowledge, as before sentence shows).

but my choice will be made easy with price factors, i will go for jj's or tung sol i think. would be really nice to have a few models though...

How would you discribe the sound of your tubes at minimal medium and hot level? very interested, maybe i should start a thread where people only discribe there tubemodel and sound, or with audio, and leave out the catfighting, i have to wade true 40 post long dicussions now to pick up the information.

a second esx? cool, i am getting used to mine but i think this one is a stayer. i first had the emx but no matterhow the machine sounded to poppy slick for me. i want to experiment, and i think man can do that with esx :)

I feel compelled to post this here because i had a tough time with my esx1 & came down on it pretty hard early last year BUT....Every cloud has a silver lining !

A short story to explain...

...I shelved my electribe last year partly because of the hot noisy main outputs & partly because of my own non understanding (Yeah, i get it now !)

I made up my mind & i bought a used roland (Sorry for swearing) mc909 sampling groovebox...This was going to be my centerpiece & the answer to my prayers.
So, got that then, spent some cash on it getting it serviced, recapped, some new faders throughout etc.. When i got it back i settled down with it for the winter & began
getting to know it. There's a lot of features in the thing & i figured that given the right amount of downtime i would master it & we would have a happy & long affair !
Anyway, i found it tricky to use & ended up writing all songs in pattern mode owing to the lack of functions it has in song mode. This took ages to get a tune written & it
meant that if i made a screw up during real time record, it was a proper faff to put i right each time....Days would go by trying to get 4 1/2 mins of audio !

Right. Because that seems off topic i'll cut to the chase quicker..... The roland mc909 sampling groovebox slowly drove me bonkers ! Flipping from screen menu to
menu screen, back & forth, far too many parameter settings even for the simplest of tasks. Mis-recording & slowly sucking my life away !!!!
......I GOT RID !

DECIDED TO RETURN TO MY ELECTRIBE ESX1 SD. Yes, thats my point to posting here now. In spite of the reasons that i shelved it before.

Apart from the rude interruption during my groovebox spell (Glad it was short lived) i have written every pattern & every song on my electribe sx for the last 3 years.
I now have it as my main sequencer once again & even plan on buying a second one for the extra keyboard parts.
It is now controlling a minibrute, an ms20 mini & a novation a-station via midi as well as providing drums & percs for me AND accepting another sequencer via midi thru
to clock the whole lot & provide further keys etc..

SO, i'm writing this then in praise of the KORG ELECTRIBE ESX1 SD (In capitals) & to follow up my complaining posts over a year ago.
In fact i am completely smitten by the esx1. I always did love the interface & i can's imagine writing my sequences on anything else. I love it !
The noisy power jack is ok if not moved (I have a better desk now) & with the master level & tube gain in the right places it sounds wicked (Although i do have to
clean my mixes in computer after recording through the master outs but i have found a simple method...HA)

So there it is, i'm a self confessed addict of the esx1. Hopelessly doomed to suffer its limited interface forever ! Limited = good because i can get my ideas down
quickly ! The tubes, dunno any good replacements for the red machine & i don't care if they go flat to be honest as long as i can get a good sound from it, i'm happy !

I would love to see an improved 'next generation' electribe. Same interface but with extras . That's a different story though.
