HD-1 Streaming Sample Demo: The Ghost Ship QR

With OS 2.0.2 we got the possibility to create large samplesets in the Korg Kronos that almost don't use any memory because the samples are streamed from the SSD.

Most people are using it now at the moment to transfer their SF2 files or Akai Sample Cd's to the Kronos. But you can do much more with them if you are programming your own sounds. Here's an example of one of my new sounds called The Ghost Ship.

In this video i show only one program which uses a wavesequence that is created with a Virus TI patch that i programmed earlier. I've created a 35 MB Sampleset from that Virus TI Patch and transfered that as a streaming sample pack to the Kronos. Then i used that streaming Sample as the source for a new Wave Sequence i've created.

The last step was to combine 2 Wave Sequences (one preset and one of my one) into one program and set the envelopes and filters on it, and there it was, my new program called: The Ghost Ship.

The best part: this 35 MB sampleset only takes 1.8 MB of memory!

That's awesome Qui!

Unfortunately, I have this additional new set of power tools lurking here in my studio and to be honest have 0, that's Zero knowledge of any form of sampling, transferring, filing and loading them.
Hoping to get on with the program from all the help here on the forum. Always appreciate your work, thanks for posting.

Wow! Gorgeous sound!

The K has gone from lame sampler to the alltime top notch hardware sampler now with OS2. I own a Virus TI 2 and would love to have some sampling fun but my programming skills are rusty and not my priority. Soon now! You must be having lots of fun. Are you sampling your Virus via PC? I use Mac.

wow..excellent as always Qui :)
I wish i had more time to explore the inner workings of the Kronos

Yes, i sample in the PC. Every synth i have has it's own L/R input channel through ADAT. So whenever i want to sample one of the synths i simply select that ADAT channel and start sampling.

In the old OS 1.6 i didn't use sampling that much, i found the KSC handling and the usage of samples too much of a hassle. Now with OS 2.0.2 things have changed. Creating large samplesets by sampling a lot of 10 seconds length notes gives me the possibility to capture the unique atmosphere of a synth and transfer that with low Memory cost to the Kronos.

But program sound cloning is not something that takes my interest. I only want to expand the Korg library with new unique samples that i can use to create new sounds. For me it's like having an almost unlimited possibility to expand the the Korg Rom Library.

Now i have created an enormous sound library for lots of synths in the past, so i have a lot of original material to choose from and the next months i'm going to create those 'expanded rom wavesets' which i'm going to use to create new sounds with.

This absolutely rocks, Qui! Yesterday I was loading some sample sets of my Microwave XT, and streaming those alongside slowly evolving Kronos wave-sequences, and overlaying vector envelopes on top of it all. All one fairly simple HD1 program with so much depth and motion going on.....and no Karma was used at all. Kronos is an utterly amazing sound design machine....and 2.0 has REALLY brought that up to new levels! Really looking forward to see what the new editor may bring to the table (high hopes!).

Thanks RonF.

Did you also try to create new wavesequences out of your samplesets? I think this is the best part of OS 2.0.2 The fact that you can combine those samplesets into completely fresh new material.

I've done all the Virus TI wavetables now, so i have those in my kronos now. And i just started with sampling a selection of patches that i programmed for the Virus TI and create a new refill sample set for the kronos with that. I'm looking in to the possibilities of completely change the sampled material with VST FX before transfering them to the kronos.

When i'm done with that i will start to sample the jp8000 or the Neuron (didn't decided yet). Now that makes me wondering what i can achieve with that. When combining the refills of the Virus TI and the Neuron or JP to create new wave sequences of them i can imagine that this will give some extra ordinary results.

Also i'm experimenting with Random KARMA patterns (random seeds) that sents note and CC information to self oscillating filters in the MS-20, i've combined those in a combi with 2 HD-1 programs where i programmed the wave sequences in a tempo based sequence. Because i use 4 wave sequences in different tempo's, they complete eachother very well. I'm not there yet with the sound i want to achieve with that, but i'm making progress :)

This new OS 2.0.2 is really something special and i think a lot of nice things will be available from several resources in the next years.

I'm really digging where you are going with your ideas here Qui. For some time now I have been creating custom wavesequences using sample material from the Karo EXs which I have purchased. Results are astounding. Sometimes I wish we had more than 10 seconds per slot! But that's a minor gripe, mostly for slowly evolving ambient soundscapes.

Wavesequencing is perhaps one of the best parts of the Kronos, in my view. I like to think of it as advanced user editable Wavetable synthesis, to the point where its essentially a 10th synth engine in the Kronos sound design palette.
