a few harpsi threads have been see on this fine forum over the years, but none recently.
as the "second generation" kronos is becoming available...
have their been any improvements?
i know that there IS a kronos harpsi sound
but...
what is the BEST harpsichord sound you know of at this point in time?
as always, thank you in advance

The Kronos and the Kronos X are the same machine, the only difference is that the X comes pre-fitted with RAM and an extra SSD. You can upgrade the original Kronos to the same spec very easily. Bottom line is that the sonic palette of the Kronos X is identical to the Kronos.
My personal favourite harpsichord is in the harpsi+string patch in the Korg Trinity. It appears in the latter half of this track I wrote some years ago, in the final big build-up towards the end.

Imo the Kronos harpsichord samples are not better than GM crap. And I believe the STR-1 engine is not good enough at emulating a harpsichord accurately for the reasons I have explained before (no modelling of the interaction between the strings and the soundboard, and of the soundboard and the air).
Now that we can stream user samples, the best solution would be to load *good* samples into the Kronos.
I'm also in Baroque music, and the best harpsichord samples I have ever heard (imo) can be found
here (Blanchet) and
there (Taskin).
And they are free!
The sets are in Hauptwerk format but
the samples are in .wav format and they can be used without conversion. The only thing you'll have to do is the key mapping and the programming of the release samples upon release of the key. The little work it takes is really worth it.
And don't forget to tune those harpsichords in baroque temperaments on your K...

My personal favorite harpsichord sample is the one from the Roland jv orchestral expansion card. Search black diamond by stratovarius on YouTube and you will immediately hear it. I have the samples on my website (see my signature) for Kronos.

Not bad, given the small size of that multisample, yet not quite as good as the harpsichord sample in the SO-PCM1-06 "Baroque" expansion board for the JD-800/990, which you can also find in the SR-JV80-07 "Super Sound Set" expansion board
And in the "Super Sound Set" expansion board you have all the 3 stops (registers) : front, back and lute stop
>>> click here to hear the SR-JV80-07 'Hps Front 1' patch of the SR-JV80-07 board
Btw, it's a real shame Roland didn't include the Organ Principal sample of the SO-PCM1-06 board in the SR-JV80-07 board ; they just included the Organ Flute sample ; they had rather left half of the accordions out.
Same thing for the Orchestral II board: they didn't include the powerful low C of the basses from the Roland sample CDs ; they had rather left the celtic instruments out, anyway no composer would have to compose for a remake of the Titanic when they released that board. That's very typical of Roland: their programmers were excellent and their marketing was quite poor...

I also appreciate good harpsichord sounds and some keyboards don't give them much priority. My favorite harpsichord sound that I own is on my Kurzweil PC88mx. (I also bought a Micro Ensemble so that I could sell my PC88 and still have Kurz harpsichord and strings, but haven't sold it yet.) I'll have to check out that free harpsichord mentioned above.

The Kurzweil Harpsichord is actually my 2nd fav. after the roland one.
Before downloading the Roland Harpsichord. Know that they are Roland samples. I believe the law is you can use the samples if you actually own the hardware they come from.
Of course you can just download it anyway, I dont know anyone that got sued over it yet. But still.

As far as I know from research, since the product has been discontinued and Roland makes little to no revenue off of it anymore, it lightens things a lot. Also, you can not sue over a sample you took from something else, in this case the harpsichord. Of course this is all reversed if I sell the sample, then you can get in serious trouble. I've done my research on the subject, and apparently you're in the clear if you are not selling it.
If anyone from Roland would like the samples taken down, please shoot me an email
