TR Rack - $200 - good price? and other questions

Discussion relating to all other KORG synth related products that don’t have a dedicated section. For example, OASYS PCI, M1, N Series, 01W series, T series, and more…

TR Rack - $200 - good price? and other questions

Post by zzzxtreme »

hi guys, hmmmm I need a sound module for portable setup. Just got a 49-key light controller.

my current korgs are M1, 01W and Wavestation. Thought of getting either wavestation SR or 03R/W. but this TR Rack is just about $60 more.

How very different is TR rack compared to 01W ? Would you guys recommend it to compliment my korgs in my studio? Will it have many 01W's patches?

thanks for the help

The TR-Rack is a Trinty in Rack form. Whereas the Trinity has two Banks of Combi (256) & Two banks of Proprams (256) the TR-Rack has 4 of each...a whopping 1024 preset patches. The first 2 (A/B) are Trinity Identical, the remainder are (for my money) far superior & better programmed LUSH sounds with better piano etc & some superb pads & expanded (better) drum kits etc...

I have an 01/Wfd, T1 & Wavestation myself. Love 'em all & the Trinity certainly is a different beast..... but as a patch module in a 1U rack unit, bang for buck you'd be onto a winner. Not the easiest to program without a Trinity controller but fresh outta the box, there's tons of great presets onboard.

They normally fetch between £120 & £200 here in the UK so for my money, it'd be well worth it.

Hope this may help.

Worthy of note...it'd compliment the other Korgs really well. Whereas they are all quite "warm" sounding...the TR is bright & "fresh" sounding with a sheen that the others don't quite have. I personally prefer the "warmer" sounding synths but sonically, this may offer something different for you albeit complimentary.

The Wavestation Rack & the 03R will sound like your current gear.

"will it have 01W patches?"

No. TR Rack is Trinity-based engine. No cross-compatibility there with anything you own now. Also no way for it to act as an emergency back-up with your sounds if your keys crash -- that is the only reason I'd consider getting the SR if I were in your shoes (I don't think the 03 is 01W cross-compatible either).

But...

TR Rack is compatible/identical engine to Trinity sounds, of which there are a boatload here in the download section. So you can see that there are a lot of new sound possibilities that open up including more detailed/expanded combis than the M1/01W.

thanks guys, I pulled the trigger. $250 shipped from overseas, good deal, since I'm unable to get N1R or NS5R for under $150

Good choice! Definitively a much stronger horse than the NS5R (even though that has double the polyphony, I believe). The synth engine is far better - but you'll need an editor, as it is nearly impossible to program from the front plate.

Enjoy!
