new demo (80's style) Cathode Sunset

UPDATE: I finally got around to re-recording the drums the "right" way and redid a few other items. Instrumentation is the same as before, except I'm now using the PC3 for the guitar instead of the Kronos.
I threw this together over the weekend and cleaned up a few bits tonight. Drums were recorded using a 2-mic setup, so they're really "roomy" with not a whole lot of kick. But I still think it sounds good for that. I recorded the drums before I put the arp pattern and the cabasa over the top, so there's a certain bit of "swing" to my hihat groove that kinda plays against the more straight ahead other stuff. I want to re-record the drums once I can get a better interface (with more discrete inputs). Other instrumentation is:
MS2000 - lead
Access Virus - bell/brassy sounding pads in the chorus
Kronos - everything else.

Thanks!
That's next, once I re-record the drums.tux2 wrote:Sounds great, just needs some lyrics and a singer.

Hi jeebustrain,
good stuff, well done !
I (of course) specially appreciated the drums (as I am also a drummer) that give a natural touch.
The walking lead synth (a la moog) has also a great sound.
Anyway thanks for sharing with us.
Cheers
PS: Why don't you try a good Electronic drum set and then drive the midi events through a great VST like Superoir Drummer 2.0 for instance ?
This is really facilitating the Drums mixing a lot !

You mean sonically? Perhaps. I'm still working on learning how to mix, I think they can sound better (although I'm really liking my snare sound and there is nothing the Kronos offers that offers that level of sensitivity and ability to do the type of ruffs, ghost notes and varying types of rimshot sounds that the Bill Bruford Snare does). The raw Kronos tom sounds are way too dry for my tastes, as well. I mix in a lot of room with my drum sound and use very little reverb (other than a bit on the snare) and the Kronos (along with most sample libraries in general) rely way too much on effects to add body. Plus, the way I like to tune my drums is a bit different than what's normally in drum samples as well, so that makes a difference too (albeit subtle and probably something only I notice).Vangelismusic wrote:I wonder if you played the drums with the KRONOS, would they come close to this?
Instrumentation-wise though, definitely not (from my perspective at least). At least not with the stock drum libraries. I have lots of bells/cup chimes and other homemade little doodads, along with 4 sets of stacked cymbals that I'm augmenting the track both rhythmically and melodically. Plus, as a drummer, I've always disliked the Kronos cymbal sounds. Paiste Signature samples in the Ricky Lawson library are better, but they are far too limited in scope. For me, at least. I've thought about going through and sampling various parts of the more esoteric parts of my drum/cymbal/percussion collection, but I'd honestly rather just play it myself.
Then again, I'm a pretty picky bastard though. I dislike the drum sounds on most modern rock/pop/metal recordings, whether they be real or sampled.
