Will my korg Kronos have any problems soon?
My model is Kronos 61 serial no. 000137 I did have a problem with my data wheel it poped out when I first bought it. How many people have had any problems with the early modes such as my self? What are the chances of mines going bad?
You probably will have zero problems. I only use the word probably as all electronic equipment from any company can fail without warning, but your Kronos has as much chance as any competitors.
The data wheels on the very first batch were replaced almost immediately by korg.
The keybeds with the problems were some of the 73 and 88 note weighted ones.
My thread detailing my problems with my 88, if you look at it, there's just five of us from all around the world currently reporting problems. Sure it shouldn't happen hence we're very vocal about it, but its still just five of us.
My thread:
Saxifraga is from Germany, his is now fixed.
Davidb I don't have a clue what country he is from, but he never mentions Korg UK so I don't think he's from here.
Bobthedog is having problems in the UK, but from reading it, Andertrons might not have communicated to Korg exactly what the problems were as they have fixed his fan and it looks like they might not have not looked at hs other problems.
Warman309 has said he's having velocity problems but hasn't expanded on what they are or what country he is in.
That's only 4 people, 4 too many but all products have some failure rates. And I can only confirm that Bobthedog is also in the UK, meaning just two of us from the UK have had problems in the past few months.
And when I was angry last week and stupidly considered swapping my Kronos for something else, Bobthedog advised me to stick with it even after his problems, that says something about the Kronos compared to the competition.
I would be very surprised if there wasn't just as many people having their synths repaired under warranty by all of the competition.

It´s not fully fixed.
Just found out that C# (octave 4) is always 15..20% louder then the rest.
That means, using the german grand, that you get the next waveform which is distinctly different and louder than the other notes. Most songs I play use that note not very often. So I did not recognize it until now. (btw. I did not actively search for this. I did not want to be annoyed. I just played and it hit my ear.)
So Korgs QC failed me once again.
I don´t want to be a drama queen or a cutomer from hell, but this is unacceptable. Bad hardware design and bad software design!?
Korg really begins to disappoint me.
This cannot be only me, Ojustaboo and three others.
This has to be a thing that´s part of the product design.
I can only assume they never intended to play piano pieces on this machine.
This C#4 stands out a mile for any classic piano recipient. If you play heavy rock stuff and use Karma and the drums you may never find out about this.
But anyone who uses velocity switched sounds should find such faulty keys soon.
What to do now? Send it back once again?

I've been playing mine, deliberately not using the piano while waiting for my new one to arrive.
But then I choose say UD:013: Spaghetti Guitar and it stands out a mile

I'm hoping my X version gets rid of all these problems but I have come across two complaints about it. One in a thread on karma Labs forum about stiff keys,
http://www.karma-lab.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18805
and another on youtubeJust got my Kronos X88 a few weeks ago and found the same problem 2 days ago. A3 seems to stick....require slightly more pressure than any of the other keys to depress. Hoping it goes away like your issue did....I don't really want to send it away
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Osf_zq3NKT0
While the youtube one is just something clicking against the key, after what I've been through, I am very cautious and will be trying out my X in the shop and testing each key, if any problems, then I'm going the Motif route.
The main thing I want is a very good keybed for piano, then everything else is second. I really really hope my X is fine (especially after just buying reincarnated for it), I really do love the Kronos and anything else will be a step down.
But better a step down that I can play than one that drives me nuts.. Still, hopefully I'll be fine.
Mind you neither of these two problems were the note cutoff or velocity, so fingers crossed.
Re: Will my korg Kronos have any problems soon?
I had an early model 61 and one of the keys didn't function correctly. I didn't notice it for a while and fortunately it was not that bad that I couldn't live with it under most circumstances. I eventually sold it and started looking for a 73 key version. After reading this thread, I've decided not to bother buying another Kronos. I'll just get a weighted controller for my Receptor.Brilyint wrote:My model is Kronos 61 serial no. 000137 I did have a problem with my data wheel it poped out when I first bought it. Its the same behaviour that hapenned tome with the 3rth unit (serial nº 2.973 Kronos 73, BTW) my local Korg Dristributor exchanged me.
It was an specially tense situation, as it happened *after* the fix they did to elimite the cut off problem in that model, changing the pink contacts for the blue ones.
Well, yes, you can always try. What to do now? Send it back once again?
Be prepared to put your patience to test, though.

Part of the problem is, my Kronos passed all the tests Korg run perfectly.
And the problem is still there as you can very obviously hear from my soundcloud link in my earlier post.
When I spoke to Korg last week and they offered to send the training guy to my house as a way of an apology, their top engineer did say that to be honest he doesn't know what else they could have done with my Kronos as all their tests pass.
That sort of rings alarm bells with me because that would mean, had I returned my Kronos, again they would have found no problem, again they would have presumed something fixed its self in transit and again I would be left fuming with a sub par keyboard.
I think with the velocity problems, they need to put their handbook/ repair procedure to one side and have an actual play rather than running set tests.
I sent them the following email today

Been playing around with my Kronos over the weekend while waiting for my X to arrive.
When we talked on the phone, you said that you weren't sure what more could be done with regards to the problem I am having.
I see on Korg forums a guy in Germany has just had his contacts replaced due to the note cut-off problem and is now having exactly the same problem as I am, only with his C#4 key.
I've been deliberately avoiding piano sounds while waiting for my replacement, however I noticed that is was just as bad and sometimes worse on non piano sounds. For example UD:013: Spaghetti Guitar
Trouble is, the very nature of the problem I think it's only going to be able to be found by playing in a certain way at a certain velocity. If I play very soft, it's fine. If I play slightly louder it's fine. But I reach a point and this happens

As you can clearly hear, this is obviously unacceptable.
Just sending this really for something for you guys to ponder over, as if anyone else has this problem, it might be that your normal tests don't show it, and I wouldn't want them having it returned still being there.
Hi,
I have a Kronos 88 key version, it's annoying sometimes that I can hear the keyboard squeeking when playing in low volume.
Has anyone noticed the same problem on theirs?
I went to a shop the other day, I think it might been better to go for a 61 key instead with an external 88 key midi-controller.
The wheel also is not as smooth as any other keyboard I used before, it worris me when using it, feels like something is being scratched from the inside.
Overall, the sounds are nice, just the finishing I guess could've been better.
