Unless the thing your looking for didn't come from the factory.jeremykeys wrote:I think that probably the quickest way is to use the factory set list and from there you can quickly access each sound engine.

That's true but if you're just looking for a specific sound engine it works well enough. If I remember correctly, on set list 001, you will find a sound example from all 9 engines. From there it ie fairly easy to get that particular synth engine to do what it is you are probably trying to do.
Another way is to go to a blank prog slot and simply call up a sound engine and program it from scratch.

If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!
Gear: Kronos 73, Wavestation EX, Polysix, King Korg, Monotron and Monotron Duo, Minikorg, Moog Grandmother, my very old MiniKorg, 4 acoustic and 9 electric guitars, 1 Ibanez 5 string bass, a Steel guitar, a bunch of microphones, 2 pairs of studio monitors and other very cool toys, 1 wife and 4 cats and a lava lamp!

Yeah, that's what I expected when I got it too. It would have made it easier to "jump in" to the whole 9-engine concept, without having to research, and making it feel more like operating an "instrument" (hit a button, start playing with the sound interface) as opposed to operating a "computer" (be in this mode, go to this screen, go to that menu, select option x...).Ojustaboo wrote:I expected to have a screen showing the 9 synth engines and being able to for example pick the poly 6 or ms20 one, rather like the ipad apps and simply adjust and play, then being able to save to a patch number and add effects etc later if I so wished.jimknopf wrote:I was surprised to learn that it is not possible to browse programs by engines.

For those of you who would like to explore each engine group, I copied some program banks from the OASYS. The OASYS started out with only HD-1, CX-3 and AL-1 engines. As Korg added new engines, like STR-1, it would come with a STR-1 bank. LAC-1 came with a bank of MS20/PolySix programs. Finally, MOD-7 came with its own bank. About a year after that, Korg released another AL-1/STR-1 bank, so that's on here, also.
EXi GROUPS
CAUTION: Before loading, make sure you SAVE any programs you might have made or collected in the UBB-UGG banks. The following is in this PCG file:
UserBB - AL-1 programs (originally the Int F bank on OASYS)
UserCC - MOD-7
UserDD - LAC-1 (PolySix/MS20)
UserEE - STR-1
UserFF - CX-3 (00-51) and AL-1 (52-127)
UserGG - AL-1, STR-1, CX-3 programs
No other banks, wave sequences, GEs, Drum kits or Global data is on this file, just the above banks.
You can also Audition these sounds directly from disk. Select the "EXiGroups.PCG" and press OPEN, select a bank and OPEN again. Highlight a sound and just start playing.

...and I think that would have made the Kronos more appealing on the showroom floor, too. The showroom browser has no obvious way to check out all these "engines" they're touting. The promotion of the design of the unit doesn't really align with the experience the user gets when he first encounters one.Ojustaboo wrote:I expected to have a screen showing the 9 synth engines and being able to for example pick the poly 6 or ms20 one, rather like the ipad apps and simply adjust and play, then being able to save to a patch number and add effects etc later if I so wished.
Here is a time consuming solution that can be used very effectively (if you want to spend the time getting it set up)
Go into Global Mode and choose the category tab. Depending on how you want to do it, you can change the Main Category names to the names of the 9 Engines available to the Kronos or you can use the sub categories to do it. The sub category options will be alot more tedious....
the best way to do it would be to give up the default main category names and change them to the kronos engine names.
like I said the other option is a bit more tedious and would take a little more work and thought....
Do you guys think this would work for you?

If you change the category names, you would have to write each program with a new category. That's 3,000+ programs in my case. It's better to invest the time to audtion the all programs, Write your most useful as Favorites, and use the Favorites box in Category search. Fine tune the Categories as necessary, but changing them to reflect the synth engine (when many have two Exi) sounds like a mess, and would not help at all with Combis.

so when you change the category names... any program attached to that category is "blanked out"?xp50player wrote:If you change the category names, you would have to write each program with a new category. a Category or SubCategory is just a slot in a list. If you change one of those preset Categories, what ever Programs refered to that slot will now have the new wrong Category name. It would be better to add SubCategories under certain families of sounds to include specific synth engines, then modify only the programs you want to use those Categories. This way you won't mess up the whole Category system.

Right. That's what I was saying.... it would be a bit more tedious .xp50player wrote:a Category or SubCategory is just a slot in a list.
