Monotribe

Post by mikemolloyuk »

My lovely wife just bought me a Monotribe for Christmas.

Today is my first day of using it so here goes.

Any tips from anyone?

Going to rig it up to SONAR X1 and play along with some of my existing tracks.

Time to get analogue..!

If you want, you can heavily study how everything reacts to everything and find some really neat stuff can be done. Analogue is king :)

What a lovely gift from your wife!

I really do love the Monotribe, even if it is a bit of a toy, it's still possible to use it for serious music making.

Don't be afraid of the ribbon: even though it's inaccurate, it complements the analogue vibe of the instrument well. Being able to do portamento and vibrato on the ribbon, without digital aliasing, is wonderful.

Like many other instruments, it's one that you really need to learn how to play well. It's a performance instrument, so I find treating it as such pays off. I think if you try and play it like a keyboard it can be disappointed. I tend to play it more like I would a theremin.

The other thing I think is really cool is being able to experiment with polyrhythms - being able to have multiple drum parts of different lengths. Fun times!

Also, adding MIDI is pretty easy. I haven't done mine yet as it's in storage, but it's something I'd very much like to do.
