Problem recording drum track and/or KARMA via midi to DAW

Post by Corgy »

After scanning through the forum and not finding a solution I hope not to put in a too silly question.

How do I record the Drum Track or the KARMA tracks directly via Midi form Kronos (OS 2.0.6) into my DAW (SONAR X2):?:

Here is my setup:

Hardware:
- Kronos Midi-in/out cables connected to PC-Midi/Audio I/F (EMU)
- Kronos audio-in/out connected via S/PDIF to PC-Midi/Audio I/F (EMU)

Kronos/Software:
- Local Control = Off
- Karma enabled for sending to external MIDI
- Drum Track set to Midi 10
- a combi with some KARMA/Drum Track prepared (factory preset)

DAW (test environment):
- Audio track to record/play back Kronos audio
- Midi track-in set to OMNI from Korg, just to catch any Midi from Kronos
- Midi track-out set to Midi 1,2,...-16 alternatively

This works:
- using Kronos as a masterkeyboard (Kronos-Midi-Out -->DAW)
- re-routing the Midi in to any of the Midi out (1-16) and sending the notes back to Kronos (the addressed voices generate sound)
- starting Karma and Drum Track via this setup
- listening to the complete combi-output on the audio track as I play the keyboard.

BUT this does not work:
- receiving any midi notes from Karma or Drum Track in the DAW while both are running by themselves. I can listen to them - but no midi.

From this I conclude, that only Midi notes from Karma or Drum Tack are not routed to the Kronos midi out port. I have come to the point to assume that I must have missed something important in the manual or in the tutorial from SeedyLee, dated from 31.12.2011 (here in the forums)

Thanks to anybody, who can help with advice :)

Do you have the Tracks status to Ext or Both?

I was in combi-mode and did only find Ext. Is there a Both too?

Just to add this...

After writing the post I tried the following with success:

I copied my combi to sequencer mode, recorded my piece of music on Kronos in sequencer mode, switched Karma and Drums off, set the tracks to Both, started Kronos to play back the tracks and recorded the midi-tracks according to their Midi channels in my DAW. The DAW played the Midi back on the combi (after switching back from sequencer mode) and it worked. That's a kind of work around, but I would prefer to record the Karma and Drum Track during life playing of the combi itself ... :wink:

Local Control = On

Here are a few links that explain it. One is for Kronos the other M3 but I would think the M3 article will apply since it's the same implementation of Karma.

@Bald Eagle

Thanks for the links - I will check it out, didn't find them in the Karma forum myself :oops:

Never got the idea to do it vice versa - "Kronos local on" - "DAW off"

What may make it extra confusing is that Sonar will set all connected devices to local off upon boot.

Not confusing - I would say. Until now it was convenient, because I like the DAW to be the boss around.

I merely meant it could be confusing if you weren't aware and were trying to set it to local on.

It's usually convenient.

You can setup Sonar X2 so that it does not set local control off when you start up.

Find the TTSSEQ.INI file. In my Windows 8 system it's in C:\Users\userid\AppData\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR X2 Producer

In the [Options] section, add the line:
SendLocalOff=0

That's a very good advice - again - Thanks! 8)

Cool! Thanks. Though it should just be a setting in the preferences somewhere. Stuff like this is why people switch to Mac ;)

If Sonar is set to turn local control off at startup you can also have it turn it back on when Sonar exits.

In the [Options] section, add the line:
SendLocalOn=1

It would have been nice if the global local control settings could also be overridden at the project level but at least it's something.

All of these settings are documented in the Sonar Reference Guide in the Initialization Files chapter. I also would have thought there would have been a screen that has some of these basic and useful settings.

Thanks - good to know - I never payed this section of the Reference Guide any attention. May be I find some other interesting things too 8)

Did you ever make the suggestion to Cakewalk that including those settings in the Preferences would be a good idea :?:
