Korg Kronos Tutorial: 14 Creating your own combi QR
Watch the tutorial in 1080p so that you can read the screens

It has been some time since i've posted some new tutorials or free sounds, now my website is finished i have time again to produce tutorials and free sounds. So here's the first for this year and there's more to come...

Most people find it hard to create their own combi and i must admit, building good combis takes a lot of time to learn.

But if you just want to create simple play-along performance combis then you can use a very handy feature called: Copy From Program. This feature does a lot of the things for you when building combis. In this tutorial first i will give an example from a combi and then we will build a simular combi in this tutorial.

There are some things you need to know when building your own combis. Those tricks can take a lot of time to learn normally but by watching this tutorial all the steps you need will be explained.

Things that are going to be explained:
- copy programs to a combi
- using the effect system in a combi
- using KARMA for arpeggiator patterns
- using KARMA for basslines
- timbre setup and filtering

you can watch the video on my tutorial site:
Qui Robinez Tutorials

All the text with the steps to take in the video can be found on that website, so you can print them or reread them without watching the video.

or you can watch it directly here:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7frcN8ASFk0" frameborder="0"></iframe>

I hope you like it and can use it to create your own combis. If you got any questions about this, then just post the question in this thread and i will see if i know the answer to it.

A couple mistakes in your written directions:

You start the adding a Synth section by saying:
"Let's add a piano sound" - but that was added previously

Also the Synth sound is listed as IEA-050 and should be IE-050

Looks like you probably cut the piano section and pasted to do the synth and missed a couple things.

- select an arpeggiator sound that you like (for instance IEA-050 Sine Synth)

Thanks, i will change it in the written text on my website.
The issue is too small to repost a new video, but for the written text it is a good thing to modify.

But good find 8)

Qui, thanks for being so thoughtful and taking the time to post this tutorial. There are many users here I'm sure feel the same.
I pretty much know the drill but still came away with more under my belt. Very helpful and much appreciated…

thanks for the remarks :)

i've also got a question through email where someone had a problem with the insert effects. He was addings sounds with copy from programs menu option and checked the ifx-used checkbox as explained in the video. Then he got a message that there were no more free IFX slots available.

Now keep in mind that you only got 12 IFX slots for the complete combi, this fills rather quickly. So if you use a lot of sounds in your combi than you will reach that IFX slot limit. Now this is easy to solve. When using factory sounds almost every sound uses a stereo limiter for the drums. when you added a program look at the IFX slots and remove the last added stereo limiter because you simply don't need it. The first sound you copied already added that limiter to IFX 12 in most cases.

The next step is to check what kind of effects you want for your sound. Most sounds uses some kind of effect that already is in your IFX setup when you copy a couple of programs. It's not needed to add 2 delays for multiple sounds. You can add one delay for instance and in the routing 1 subtab you could route the other program to that same delay. That way you save a lot of IFX space.

12 effect processors is a lot of processing power for a complete combi and in almost any case this will be enough to create a perfect sounding combi. So get acquinted with the routing 1 subtab of the IFX tab. This way you can route your sounds any way you want.

If you only use two till four sounds then the above steps aren't needed because most sounds uses no more then 3 insert effects.

hope this helps :)
