No sound in mic (while connected to kp3)

Post by zenko »

Hi everyone, I have connected my KP3 to the mixer in the same channel as my mic, and I can't get any sound from my mic.
Previously I managed to get only a few effects on my mic, but now I can't get anything.

I want to get my mic to work ALL the time, not only when im touching the pad, is this possible?

Here is a picture of how I have connected everything (I have NO experience on how to connect things to a mixer, keep that in mind :p)

Well, based on your picture it would help if you flicked the switch on top to "Mic" instead of "Line" :P (don't feel bad, I've been stumped by this before). Once you do this, you can simply use the Hold button to let the sound pass through as though you were touching part of the pad.

EDIT: I don't think most mixers let you "overlap" inputs like you have there, and you're running an XLR mic, so ignore my mic/line thing. You'd be best to run the KP3 through an FX loop if your mixer has one.

You've got a whole lot of fail going on with your connections. You need to read the manual for your mixer. It's worth it.

You can't use the XLR and line input jacks on the same channel at the same time.
You can't use the Insert jack the way you are. Insert is not an input. It's a monophonic send and return.
The KP3 is a stereo effect unit designed for an effects loop.

What you need to do:

Mic is connected to the XLR on channel 1.
Nothing else is hooked up to channel 1.

The mono effects send on the mixer needs to go to the KP3 input(s). It can go to the mic input by using a standard instrument/patch cable, 1/4" mono TS plug to 1/4" mono TS plug. Or it can go to the stereo line inputs on the KP3 by using a Y adapter cable or adapter, 1/4" mono TS plug to a pair of RCA. If you go to the mic input then you can control the input level with the Mic Trim knob on the front of the KP3. You flip the mic input switch on the KP3 to pick which input you used. The input level knob needs to be adjusted so that the input level LED is mostly green, occasionally peaking with a yellow, and never red (overloaded).

Then you need to hook the KP3 stereo line outputs to the Effect Return L+R jacks on the mixer. So you need a pair of RCA to 1/4" mono TS plug cables, or a single stereo cable that has 2 RCA and 2 1/4" mono plugs. You can adjust the amount of the KP3 effect by using the Effect Return knob on the mixer. The connection switch needs to be set to SEND on the KP3.

or if you want to run the MIC direct thru the KP3.. you'll need an XLR-to-1/4inch-TS MIC cable to plug directly into the KP3 MIC input.. then just plug the KP3 into a stereo channel on the mixer with a dual RCA-to-1/4 TS cable. (which you already have by the looks of the photo)

make sure to set the toggle switch on the KP3 to MIC.

using the KP3 on the send/return loop of your mixer is only really useful when you are running gear on the other channels and want to be able to selectively apply FX to them.
