which one is the factory-installed RAM?

Post by JimmyTheSaint »

Months ago, I installed an extra DIMM myself, no problem. I would now like to determine which of the two was installed at the factory and which one I added, but I forget. I'm including two photos. Any suggestions which is the factory-installed one?

Should be the one closer to the middle of the motherboard.

Great, thanks. That's the shorter Kingston one, not the taller SanMax one. If anyone thinks it might be the opposite, please post.

No, toward the inside of the MB, not the outer one.

D'oh! I'm an idiot. You said "motherboard," but I was thinking middle of the keyboard. Thanks again. So the taller SanMax DIMM is the factory-installed one.

Did you install the recommended 1GB? The Kingston chip says 1G on it which isn't conclusive, but the Sanmax clearly says 2GB, which is what ships standard with the Kronos.

That's the problem: I'm pretty sure I installed 2GB, even though only 1GB of that gets used. So the Kingston stick's markings just don't let me conclude that it's the aftermarket add-on. I'll have to go with geoelectro's recommendation that it's the Kingston because of its installation position.

Didn't you keep the receipt from when you bought the ram? That would tell you which one you bought.

Yahtzee! I had the scan of the receipt in my directory of receipts. That Kingston is in fact 1GB and is the aftermarket add-on. So geoelectro nailed it. Thanks.

According to the Kronos service manual the ScanMax is the original RAM. I looked at your pictures and it definitely has the # SMD 2G88HP-BE on the ScanmMax. That is the number that is referenced in the service manual.

SanMax or Hynix is the factory module. Kingston is the one you added.
