Prog track finally done - Doors Hold & Walls Release

I posted an early version of this song sometime last year. I think I've actually been working on it (off and on) for almost a year now. It's changed quite a bit since then. While the drums are live (played and recorded by me), everything else is my synthesizers, with the majority of the sounds coming from the Kronos. I used Sonar as my DAW.

I was originally intending on adding a whole set of vocal tracks, but I just couldn't come up with anything (lyrically) that I was happy with. So I added a bit more melody to some parts so it flowed a bit better.

Hi jeebustrain,
excellent work !
Especially I like the drums part (I am also a drummer :D) !
It seems that the recorded drums is a "real" acoustic set isn't it ?
I know how it is difficult to record correctly and with a great sound an acoustic drum set so congratulations !
What about the synth lead sounds ? Are they done with the Kronos or Prophecy or another one ?

Anyhow thanks a lot for sharing with us.

Cheers :D

Great Job Jeebustrain, Excellent playmanship. The only thing I noticed was the at the 9:00 min mark the transition was a little rough, I would smooth out that part. Other than that, great work.

Fantastic song, great chord progressions and use of sounds. The live drums are adding a lot of flavor to this track.

Thanks for sharing :D

thanks! Yea, it's an acoustic kit. After playing drums for more than 20 years, I've taken it upon myself to learn how to record real drums (instead of using synthesized ones). I like big kits, so it's a bit different close miking something like this than doing a small 4-piece. Regardless, it's a lot of fun and a huge learning experience. I have a friend who's an engineer who has given me some good tips.

regarding the synth sounds, the lead at 3:30 is the a sound I came up with on the Kronos, with the guitarish sounding riff underneath a stock patch on the Prophecy. At around 6:40, that lead is another stock patch on the Prophecy. That second lead was actually a last minute add, I think I was trying to channel Rick Wright (especially over the organ - which was a custom patch on the PC3)

Thanks man! Regarding the transition, it was actually totally intentional. The original version of the part before droned on and on for about 3-4 minutes and I wanted to cut it off abruptly and came up with that short transition (a variation on the intro), before going into the outro chorus.

It needs some more distinctive / interesting melody parts, instead of just repeated two- or four-bar chord progressions with layered chord / pad parts...but it is refreshing to hear a real interactive drum part, not just the typical drum-machine sampled snare on the backbeat...

That is cool, I mentioned that because I just purchased Logic Pro 9 and while recording I encountered the same thing and I am still figuring out how to edit my audio.
Thank you for sharing your music.

Hi jeebustrain,
thanks for your answers.
Very impressive drum set ! With such a set I suppose it was a long long work to record it correctly !

Cheers :D

a thoroughly pro effort and result. I think this is the best recording and performance I have heard in some time.
