I think I'm correct that I read here, or on The Synth Zone, that the PA3x uses USB1 yet on page 18 of the manual it says USB2.
Which is correct and does this apply to both front and rear USB ports?

USB type B is 1.1 and type A is 2.0
Type B is primarily intended for MIDI and not data transfer to PC - the quickest way to get data transferred to PC/Mac is via USB drive/flash-drive/thumb-drive
Cheers

Pete........do you mean by writing from the pa3x to a flash-drive and then transferring the data to a PC?karmathanever wrote: Type B is primarily intended for MIDI and not data transfer to PC - the quickest way to get data transferred to PC/Mac is via USB drive/flash-drive/thumb-drive
If I ran a USB cable from the back of the PA3x to my computer can i back up my data direct to PC .......or.......do I have to go the PA3x to flash-drive to PC route?
If I run a USB cable from the front USB port (where the flash-drive goes) to my PC, will the keyboard still save to that port.......thinking that it's a flash-drive plugged in?
Can I save directly to an external hard drive rather than the flash-drive?
BTW....that flash drive sitting there (plugged in) looks awfully vulnerable. I'm thinking I'll buy a short USB "extension" cable so that the flash-drive can hang somewhere in the back of the keyboard attached to the extension.

Hiya Marcus
First a pic of the cables and types:-
But, of course, you can connect directly to your PC using the Type B USB but the actual data transfer will be SLOW....
If time is not an issue then this works fine.
I'll give you an example - I have a Boss BR1600CD recording desk - it is old now but great - it has an internal 40GB HDD - it only has USB type B (1.1)
Last week I backed it up to my PC using that connection - I had 19GB to transfer and it took 9 hours (I left it to run overnight!!!!)
Hope this helps
Pete

If I am backing up a lot of data (e.g. 16GB from PA3X hard drive) I would transfer it to an external drive (attached to one of the 3 USB type A ports) and then attach that drive to my PC and transfer to my PC - it is far far quicker. If I ran a USB cable from the back of the PA3x to my computer can i back up my data direct to PC .......or.......do I have to go the PA3x to flash-drive to PC route?
Not possible - wrong connection - to see your Korg PA3X hard drive on your PC you can only use the USB type B port and cableIf I run a USB cable from the front USB port (where the flash-drive goes) to my PC
Yes - just attach an external hard drive (USB) to any of the USB type A ports and then copy the data in Media modeCan I save directly to an external hard drive rather than the flash-drive?
There are 3 ports - so you can have it on the front or the back of the keyboard - I personally prefer to not have "hanging" flash drives.BTW....that flash drive sitting there (plugged in) looks awfully vulnerable. I'm thinking I'll buy a short USB "extension" cable so that the flash-drive can hang somewhere in the back of the keyboard attached to the extension.

Hi Pete,
Thanks for this great explanation of MIDI cables and data transfer. I can only wish all posts by all posters in all Internet forums would be as clear as you did it here.
I now moved one of my externals to be used with the PA3x so that I have a 2nd backup in addition to the flash-drive backup.
By coincidence, I was in the computer store yesterday shopping for cables...and that short extension for the flash drive...and I realized I didn’t know that "rounded" plug was named “Type B”
Thanks also for taking the time to answer every one of my questions. I now have one less “topic” in my list of topics to ponder over with the PA3x.
BTW, I think I read somewhere along the way that you’re interested in the “blues.” Me too…..particularly Chicago blues and more modern like Stevie Ray. I recorded all my CD’s to MP3 so I have quite a collection now if you need anything (for listening only).

Thanks Marcus - yes I currently play in a Blues band (4-piece - guitar, bass, keys, drums) and we play Stevie Ray numbers as well as Gary Moore, Hendricks, Clapton etc..... I use my PA3X and Kronos (MIDI'd together) - the Kronos's CX-3 sounds is favourite and used in a lot of our numbers.BTW, I think I read somewhere along the way that you’re interested in the “blues.” Me too…..particularly Chicago blues and more modern like Stevie Ray.
