MIDI Thru - Discuss

OK 'tribe tribe. Can you help me think of a modern scenario where the MIDI thru is useful? These are the best I could do and I have never had a need for either in real life.

(I hope the ASCII art works)

Keyboard Chan 6-> EMX -out> Synth CH 1-5
-thru> Some other synth CH6

Some Master Time Piece/Transport -> EMX -thru> some other sequencer needing clock

Do these actually happen in your experience or is the MIDI thru a throwback to more complicated times? Now a MIDI merge, that would be useful.

Thanks,

without MIDI thru i'd be screwed in alot of instances as I don't have a splitter so everything has to be daisy chained.

at the moment my current setup is 2 x EMX's an MC303 and an SP404

EMX(1) master -> EMX(2)
EMX(2) THRU -> MC303
EMX(2) OUT -> SP404

this way i can filter all MIDI data but clock from the master EMX as the MC303 has no useable MIDI filtering on it. Slave EMX has note data enabled so it can sequence the SP404 so I have to use the THRU to send the clock from master with no note/CC data...

ALSO NOTE: If I ran the MC303 from the EMX(2) OUT it will not receive transport (stop/start) info from the master EMX so it wouldn't work without the THRU in the first place. for some retarded reason the slave EMX doesn't 'pass on' stop/start data to the next in the chain via the OUT.

I've got my ESX's MIDI Out running to my EMX to send clock and to master its playback data (synched start/stop). I use the EMX's Thru to send arp and note data from ESX to an R3, having set the MX MIDI Filter up so it doesn't get that note data. By running the R3's MIDI Out back to the SX, it's easy to record/play back a monophonic sequence on my R3 stored on the SX.

MIDI thru is a good way to daisy chain machines if you simply want to pass on all data from Machine A to Machine B AND Machine C, without B talking to C.

See my post: http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=82579

If Midi Thru was on the minibrute, or the Kp3, I wouldn't be facing this problem. Its very useful and it comes in handy more than you would think.

Thanks

Here's a single instance use for it that worked for me...

...Wrote a pattern & complete song on the esx1. Used the two kb parts to control two external synths .....Wanted an extra keyboard part , what to do ?...

...Plugged a yamaha qy10 sequencer to midi in on the esx1, wrote the same number of measures to it as the song length on the esx, set esx1 midi clock to external, qy10
Clock to internal. Plugged the midi thru of the esx1 into a third external synth. Hit record on the qy10 & recorded a third kb part in real time right where i needed it .

Easy & excellent solution at the time. The qy10 also offers 7 more channels & will clock the whole lot ! Not a laptop in sight ! 8)
