Write protect on HDD?
I've done some programming today on thie Kronos but cannot write properly to the HDD.
1) I keep getting a message that the disk is write protected when I try to copy things to it (from for example a USB stick)
2) When I select Disk ->HDD save mode - from the drop down menu I only get:
Hide Unknown files
Translation
Everything under that is greyed out and I cannot select anything at all.
Under Media Info tab it says
Write Protect is Off
I can't think of anything else. Any ideas?

This is from the OG:
Memory protect
Memory Protect lets you prevent certain types of data
from being overwritten accidentally. There are
individual check‐boxes to enable Memory Protect for
different parts of the system, as described below.
For Programs, Combinations, Songs, Set Lists, Drum
Kits, Wave Sequences, and KARMA GEs, Memory
Protect prevents:
• Using the Write command to save edits
• Loading the data type from disk
• Receiving dumps of the data type via MIDI SysEx
When enabled for Songs, Memory Protect also
prevents recording in Sequencer mode.
When enabled for Internal HDD Save, Memory Protect
prevents saving any data to the internal disk.
Before saving edits, loading data, and so on, use the
following procedure to turn the memory protect off.
1. Press the GLOBAL switch to enter Global mode.
2. Go to the Global P0: Basic Setup– Basic page, and
select the Basic page.
Press the Basic tab at the bottom, and then press the
Basic tab above it.
3. Press the “Memory Protect” check box for each
type of data you wish to write or save, so that the
box is unchecked.

That does not sound like the same thing. Write Protect is mostly about saving to patch/combi/global storage e.g. when you hit 'write'. which does use the SSD but secretly in the background.. OP is talking about file management in Media mode.
Sounds to me like you may have some kind of filesystem corruption on your SSD.

If you are trying to copy something from a USB device to the SSD you have to be in the "Utility" tab of Disk Mode. If you are in the "Save" tab of Disk Mode and you are trying to save to a USB device, make sure the USB device is NOT write protected. Sometimes there is a physical switch on the USB device that allows write protecting.

you need to be much more specific. I am seeing some confusing references and terminology and cannot really determine what your exact problem is.richford wrote:I've done some programming today on thie Kronos but cannot write properly to the HDD.

I'm working on this again tomorrow and will go through the reply posts.
In the meantime I got an email from Korg but it really isn't very helpful - it just tells me obvious stuff which I've been through already.
I have in the past saved PCG data etc.. set the auto-load file for my live setup and so on - so it's not entirely new to me but the errors I'm getting now are.
I was trying to do two things. I downloaded (and paid for ) some new sounds from Korg. As part of the process I was asked to copy a file from my USB stick to the internal memory. This was when I was getting "Write-protect" warning.
However they loaded OK into RAM and I had my keyboard doing the things I kind of wanted it to do - at which stage I wanted to save the entire setup to SSD.
This is when it all really went pear-shaped. I went to the usual disc menu and pressed the drop-down but none of the useful stuff like saving data was accessible.
I had not selected a "locked" folder or factory or anything - this was when I posted my problem.
Looking at the replies to date I'm going to try and do this without any USB connections happening at all to see if that makes any difference.
Will post follow up one way or other in next couple of days,
Thanks for all your replies.

Thanks awyatt1 - this was indeed the answer.awyatt1 wrote: 1. Press the GLOBAL switch to enter Global mode.

It appears that the reason I didn't have a problem before and then suddenly did was that when I install new sounds from the Korg website via USB pen drive during the process it does indeed check the Memory protect SSD box.
I uncheck the box and then I can save my data correctly as I wish.
It did this with three different libraries - each time this parameter becomes reverted to "Protected". I don't see this behaviour documented anywhere. But under normal usage conditions it never happens ( I don't think)
So it's a bit of a gotcha really.
Thanks for everyone's help.
That could happen if you choose to load 'Global' settings from the PCG.
Ideally PCGs for distribution shouldn't contain global data. Can't remember though off the top of my head if that is necessary for drum patterns, wave sequences, etc. which are edited through Global mode.

I'm having a slightly different problem. I have all of my write protects in global mode turned off. I'm trying to write an SNG file to a USB stick but I keep getting the message that my "file is read only protected".
Is there any way to change this so that I can save it to a memory stick?
