My first recording with the Kronos with my band (studio)

Hey guys,
My band and I are in studio and I'm having a blast with the Kronos. Great experience, the guys really dig all the sounds that can get out of this beast. They are used to listen to me through an used and constantly clipping mono amp during the jams, so they are impressed with the sound quality and clarity. We did a cover of Circus Maximus to test our gear for the studio and filmed (dubbed it) it during a rehearsal in our local. Here it is :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... wkdusIssZw
I created most of my sounds, and I used some community presets, hence when I share it here. I bought the Protein 1 pack from Sounds of Planet, which has AWESOME leads and pads.
For instance, @3:53 features the "X-101 - GIOVE Lead", then a discrete but so cool pad @4:19 with "X-000 Glass World". Finally at 4:32 i used a mix of some SoP sounds with a mallet patch. I suppose all these sounds weren't supposed to be used in such a way, but I find them to add a certain heaviness to the mix, which was lacking with factory presets.
Let me know what you think.
PS : i was so stressed when filming, I look like a s*ck*r

PS 2 : we lost the master tracks with the guit/bass/drums during the recording because of a computer error... so bare with us, we couldn't adjust these sounds further more in the mix, since all we had left was an already mixed down track of these 3.

GREAT work!! I like the tasteful fills you're doing - a bit more reminiscent of Dream Theater's Kevin Moore (who I prefer) to Jordan Rudess.
I see you got a VERY positive comment from Circus Maximus' drummer and it's well deserved!
Off topic, but, as a singer I really like the sound of your vocalist. I felt a bit of a Bruce Dickinson vibe - well done!
Best,
Vlad
PS: You looked fine man. As the song went on you loosened up. So,write some originals and hit the big leagues man!!

Thanks for the good words, Vlad.
I'm glad you like my playing. To be honest, it took me about 5+ hours to record it to my taste, even though my sounds were already programmed. I don't know why, but when I know I'm recorded or filmed, I get anxious and tend to miss notes. It never happened to me before on stage (except once or twice before a solo but nothing like stage fright).
We were so thrilled to receive comments so fast from CM guys. The drummer posted on youtube as soon as I uploaded my video on their facebook page. Then the singer (Michael Eriksen) wrote us "Now that was awesome Max Doiron !! Tell the guys to keep on rockin BIG time;) Michael". We were so happy to have recognition from the band we covered, as we never thought they would even care to watch it.
With regards to the singer, it's funny that you say that, because he used to be in an Iron Maiden cover band, then a band with original songs in the style of Iron Maiden and Dio. However, we are still looking for a singer, as he will mostly do back vocals on stage + bass (he can't do both at the same time, because the songs are a bit too challenging on bass and on vocals for that).
Thanks again for the good words, it really gives me a self-esteem boost. Next recording (for our songs that are on the way), I'll try to enjoy the moment rather than focusing on how I look...

Awesome job! It's always great to see prog groups that are so in sync with each other, you guys nailed it! Also, I totally feel you on trying to record keyboards. It's like my fingers turn to sausages and can't play.
A question I have, that sound at :55 (and I guess 1:08 too?). It's one of my favorite prog sounds that I've never really been able to put my fingers on making. Did you get it in a pack or build it yourself? Any tips you can lend as to what's inside of it? I hear Rudess use it quite often.

Hey Jessiah, thanks for your feedback
Haha yeah sausages... that's how I would qualify my fingers as well during recording!
For the mallet patch at 0:55, that sounds really gave me a headache! I created two threads back then to get help from this community, and I was only able to receive help for the filter sweep at the beginning. I created it from scratch, nothing too fancy though. I used only presets program and tweaked them into a combi. The secret is in the mix with the other instruments, as alone it doesn't sound exactly like what I wanted to achieve.
Want to make a deal? Share our video to a few friends on whatever network you use and I'll send you the pcg patch as soon as I get home. What do you think?

Max, that was really impressive. While I understand the need to perform cover material (two sons who are metal players stuck with having to do that), you guys (as they) are talented enough to write and produce your own work. Can't wait to hear it.

That's awesome, sounds like a deal to me! I'll send it to my band mates and post it on my Facebook as well!

@ EJ2 : Thanks for your comment! It is really appreciated. We are indeed going to record our first album (we are doing drums tracks next weekend). Because we all have day jobs (2 of us are graduate students too), it might come out only in January 2014. For me, it'll be a great life achievement to record my first album (just did a small low budget demo).
I'll keep you guys posted when this is out
@Jessiah331 : I just sent you via PM my homemade patch for the mallet-synth type patch that you hear in our video. I had a hard time finding the good mix to create such a sound, so I understand when you say it was hard to analyse... Enjoy

Well done lads !
As an old fart that used to listen to heavy rock many years ago,but recently I prefer classical stuff instead,so, haven't heard your type of music for a while.
I began to listen to the "demo" with the intention of just getting the flavour of the sound……but soon realised that it was worthy of more attention and began to enjoy the
well performed song.
Listened to the whole thing ,all the way through…..with a smile.
A big Thank You for sharing.
Best Wishes.

Aside from the obvious Dream Theater influence (Which I Love), the instrumental parts remind me of Neal Morse (Spock's Beard). Very Melodic!
Absolutely Love It!

Thanks!
@firstlovedan : Our original songs are still (in my opinion) a mashup of each band member's own influences. I found out that the more we write, the closer we are to find our own sound. Personnaly, I'm a big fan of Neal Morse's work, but I can't write in that style

Technique-wise, I don't know how to play (and write) good organ / mellotron riffs....
