Messy user banks

So, I tried to load in the dream theater oasys soundset into my Kronos. It sorta went fine, except all the internal sounds vanished. So I panicked. Took a big breath and loaded the preload from the disk, and voila, everything is fine. We'll, almost. Now I have lots of patches from the DT soundset lurking in my user banks. Grr. I want to start fresh, and do it right.

1) do I need to reset the kronos, and If so, how?
2) how do I add sound sets without messing up?

There is no real need to "erase" patches. But if you really want to you can always switch the desired banks' "type" (EXi/HD1) in the global menu (use the drop down menu). This will clear them.

In general, you can selectively load patches from a PCG by navigating into it (so don't load the entire PCG but "open" instead), until you see the bank you want to load or even the patch you want to load. If you click load while that is selected it will ask you where you want to load it to so you can specify a location of your choice. If you load combis and programs that belong with them, you may need to redirect the combis to the correct program bank.

Thank you!

But I'm stumped about the reset-thing. How do I get my Kronos back to factory settings?

Loading the preload PCG in its entirety will do that.

Unfortunately the user programs from the big DT soundset is still there. Any clue what to do?

Next time you could try PCG Tools ... it's a free application where you can load multiple PCG files on a computer and merge/copy/change your programs/combis and set list slots very easily. When you are finished: just save the PCG file and load it in your Kronos (after backing up your original).

Sounds great, man, but I'm a Mac man.. And I don't have bootcamp running at the moment. But since the expertise is here: I got rid of the user patches, but not the combines. How do I delete a Combi, or even better delete a whole bank?

What you might try is loading an empty combi bank ( from any PCG file) in your combi bank you want to clear.

I think that your Mac has problems.

However, the link to the INIT.pcg file is not working anymore.

Ah ok ... whta you also can do use an INIT combi patch and copy it yourself (normally bank D has already a lot of empty patches) ... only the names would be incorrect but if I see INIT I don't mind what is the rest (actually mostly I clear the names completely because I never make a combi from scratch ... I always copy it from a program to start with.

This is to much a hassel. This is a good damn expensive piece of equipment, there should be an option to do filemanaging without buying an external CD drive and to the "restore and update" from there. I want my kronos like it was when it came from the factory. Nothing more, nor less.

If you have loaded the PRELOAD data file and your programs are still there (or are you talking about combis?), then that's probably because those programs are in the extra banks that weren't available during the introduction of the kronos when the preload was created. But it's very easy to solve. Here's how to reset the banks:

PROGRAM MODE:

let's say you want to initialize the program bank U-G, the only thing you have to do is:
- press the global knob - select in the right top menu the command Set Program User‐Bank
Type.
- change the bank type for U-G (or any other bank you want to empty) from either HD-1 to EXi or from EXI to HD-1.
- press ok

Now your bank is completely empty, you can do the same process again to get the determined bank type of your choice. If you want to work with the sample library (rom or ram) change it to HD-1 again, or when you want to create synth engine sounds, then change it to EXI.

(see page 756 of the parameter guide for more information about this)

COMBI MODE:
If you want to empty combi banks you have to copy an empty bank. In the PRELOAD.PCG there is an empty bank at location U-G. Now do the following to empty your other bank of choice:
- press the disk menu
- press the Load Tab on the screen
- Select the Preload.PGC but don't load it yet
- Select the button Open on the touchscreen
- select the COMBI Bank U-G (because that's the one you are going to use) and press Load
- now you will get a dropdownlist in what target lokation you want to load the combi bank. The de default is U-G, but you can select for instance U-AA to empty combi bank U-AA.
- after selecting the combi bank lokation you want to empty, press ok.
- DONE!

(see page 829: load PCG section in the parameter guide for more information about this)

It's really simple once you have done this a few times.

good practice: If you want to backup the current state of your machine before experimenting with all kind of downloaded soundsets, just do a SAVE ALL with the name: MyKronos before you load other soundsets. Then whenever you want to revert your system to the previous state the only thing you have to do is to load that MyKronos file again and your complete kronos is restored to your previous state.

you don't have to do a system restore from external dvds.

The preload.PCG file is on your SSD and can be loaded from there, since you have forgotten to create a backup of your original state, you have to do some file management yourself. Really it's very easy to do, just follow my instructions in this post.
