Newbie Routing help needed

Hi all,

Posting for the first time. I have basically started to get into beat making, looping etc on the fly.

My rig consists so far of a Rhodes 73. On top I have a Akai MPC1000, a KP3 sat on top of a Rolls half rack mixer, and then eventually probably an Akai Miniak. This will all fit on top of the Rhodes and that's what I was aiming for.

What I want to do is have the MPC, Rhodes and Miniak running through the KP3 which acts as my master fx. But I also want to use the sampling/looping function of the KP3 ONLY for the keys and not the MPC.

How do I go about routing it so I sample only the keys but still use the fx on everything?

Somebody mentioned a seperate mixer with pre/post setup, but I'm really not sure how or what that involves. And to be honest, it would mean having to use another stand which is what i DON'T want. Is there anything small and compact that could perform this touting if that is indeed what I need? If not, I thought about using the KP3 purely as a sampler/looper and then buying a small mini KP as the end of the chain for master fx. Seems daft though having a superior Kaoss purely for sampling.

Or my other option is to get a floor looper, but it is must have midi sync so I can slave it to the MPC.

Any suggestions?

The MiniKP just doesn't sound good enough IMO.

I didn't look up your mixer but can you set up a send/return loop and set up the KP3 in send mode? Then you could bring out the effect send for instruments you don't want to live-sample.

Also, I don't know what complexity you're planning for the MPC but you might be able to put the rhythm tracks into the KP3 sample slots and take it out of your performance rig once a piece if composed.

Keep us posted or post some tracks when you sort it out?

The problem with using the KP3 in send mode in a send/return loop is that a lot of the FX become useless in send mode... it also takes some serious ambidextrous movements that may just be impractical by yourself.

The best option would be to have a second FX unit for the master if you absolutely have to use the KP3 for live-looping of the keys. OR a midi syncable looping pedal to free up your hands to play keys or turn knobs or add FX to master with KP3
