Another MIDI Through quest....

Hi all, searching through different posts didn't give me a satisfying answer.

I absolutely love my KRONOS88 and I'm using it as my main and only board. Before I allways used 2 different boards (Yamaha S90ES stagepiano and KORG Triton Extreme76). Until now I have managed to get all the sound and performance right out the KRONOS so no need to use another board. All stuff from other sources (like my old S90ES) is sampled and available in my KRONOS. It's great to get all that variety out of one killermachine instead of having a stage full of different hardware. Allthough I sometimes miss a couple of extra keys within one combination. And sometimes a weighted 88key is not so smooth for playing fast leadsolo's.

Now I decided to experiment with an extra board and got myself a novation launchkey61 hooked up to a laptop (mainly with KONTAKT5) wich works great. But it allways takes a lot of effort tot convert all samples into the KRONOS (I use ESC for converting stuff) so I would like to use both.

But now I'm struggeling to get things done. I would like to achieve the following:

1) Hook up the lauchkey61 via USB (launchkey only has a USB connector) to KRONOS so I can play the sounds from KRONOS88 with a lighter keybed (launchkey61), for instance a fast leadsolo. This part works. 8)

2) I would also like to control stuff from my laptop using either KRONOS or the launchkey as a controler, so I thought MIDI through could do the job. Not confirmed yet.

3) I want to keep KRONOS as my maincontroler during gigs and take advantage of setlist mode. :D

I've read some other posts and it seems KRONOS doesn't support USB midi through (launchkey --> KRONOS --> laptop).
Does anyone know if incoming midi from USB can be passed through the classic MIDI Thru Din connector ?

It would look like this:
Launchkey --> USBCable --> (USB IN) KRONOS (MIDI Thru) --> classic MIDI cable --> (MIDI2USB) Laptop

I think you are right about the lack of midi thru (haven't tried so I am not stating a fact) - What I wonder is, since you have a laptop in the mix, why don't just go usb from each to the laptop and do all your routing there?

None of the Korg workstations support USB MIDI to MIDI Thru Din

As ed above mentions..
If everything is connected to your laptop why not just do the routing through your DAW? This is doable by setting the launchkey to a predetermined channel set up on Kronos from within a Combi/Timbre parameter page. (Channel set to external) This will allow you to play Kronos and a lead patch using launchkey.

If you don't want to route the MIDI through your DAW there are a few other possibilities.

You could use a USB to MIDI DIN adapter and then connect that to MIDI In. The adapters I have seen have a USB Type-A connector and you need type-B coming out of the Launchkey so you will also need a Type-A to Type-B adapter. I don't think this configuration will supply USB power so you would probably also need the A/C Power adapter for the Launchkey.

The Kenton MIDI USB Host should also do the job.

The Kenton will also supply up to 500mA of buss power to an attached USB device.

Thanx everyone,

I think I'll experiment with the routing through DAW. Sounds like a better alternative :D and a more reliable setup. That way I can still achieve all my requirements and probably a lot more.

Funny how one can be stuck thinking in just one direction
