Beginner with Kronos X

Post by blackmamba »

Hello everybody,
I ordered the Kronos X for Christmas :)
I have been playing the piano for some years now, and I would like to compose music for movies.
I am completely new to the workstation world and I would like to ask a couple a questions, if I may :
1) Is it easy to create your own instruments with your own samples by modifying already existing sounds inside the Kronos bank sound? (maybe the exact term is resampling?) I mean without modying each note separately..
2)Which orchestra strings would you advice to start with for movie compositions?

Thank you very much

There's a DVD tutorial on eBay for $70. There are also a series of free tutorials from Qui Robinez on YouTube that I hear are excellent.

Hello Stratario,

Thank you very much for your answer.
I looked at some of Qui Robinez 's tutorials they are indeed very good :)
Do you think buying the DVD tutorial is worth it?

About my previous question is what I talked about resampling? patching? What is the technical word for this?

I bought the DVD tutorial without thinking because I had already purchased his tutorial for Fantom-X and I knew his work was very professional. I found our about the free tutorials later. You might want to watch the free stuff first and then if you still feel a need, you can buy the DVD.

I think for what you want to do perhaps there are enough programs (single sounds) and combis (combination of sounds) in Kronos to satisfy your needs. There are also lots of multi-samples available in both Korg's KMP format as well as a more general format of SF2 from other brands of keyboards. Luckily Kronos accepts multi-samples from other series of Korg keyboards, such as Triton, M3, and Korg arrangers.

Recoding your samples from original instruments can be quite involved and time consuming. It involves recording multiple samples from a multitude of notes. Then trimming each sample. Then making what is called "loops" in order to play the sound continuously as long as you hold down a key. Then you would have to assign each sample to a key on the keyboard. So it is very involved. Luckily there's a ton of free samples and some that you can buy. If you want to sell you compositions then the samples you use have to be from a legitimate source or otherwise you may get sued. So if you download free samples you must pay attention to what they permit you to do with the samples.

Thank you :)

Indeed, looking at their demo, it looks very professional !
Why I want to do my own samples is a question of legality, I dont plan to record instruments, I would like to start from kronos's internal sounds, and modify them to fit my accurate needs and also not to have copyright troubles when using these sounds into a software. (redistribution then !)
I was looking at other posts (very interesting subject somehow) about copyrights issues and from what I understood, modifying/mixing synth sounds would be ok !

In order to modify these samples, do you think I can do this with this kronos itself or will I need to use external software to achieve this?

I'm not an expert on these. But I think a sample cannot be changed. But you can manipulate the sounds that are made by the samples with the effects and filters.

It was exactly my question :)
If you can modify the sounds with filters/effects/mix from other samples, then its perfect !

I was wondering if it could be done for the whole base instrument or if you need to do it note per note.
