With a bit of tweaking you can set the modulation sequencer to trigger from G1+Dmp, which will give you the legato monophonic envelope. Or G2+Dmp for a retriggering envelope.
Then you can use the steps to shape envelope stages. Obviously there's no release stage but you can probably get away with using the usual envelope release for that, and having the seq hit a sustain level or trail naturally off over time.
I think this is better than using another engine for it's envelope due to the complexities of routing in that situation. That ties up effects and doesn't translate well to songs and combis, etc. Whereas this can be entirely self contained in a program.
Kronos isn't plugged in right now but I definitely had one program that does this really well.
I've used the same technique on the Radias too, mostly to get the single-trigger percussion on organ sounds for example.
